Well I got this in truely awful condition. One of the worst engines I have ever seen. It is a sight glass SE1a which are rare.

Here we have it as bought:

The pictures make it look 100x better than it actually was!

I stripped it down and primed it all. I peeled the sticker off the base first though, and stuck it back on at the end.

Flywheel is the only thing with original paint.

Firebox being repainted:

Base being repainted with top coat:

I was going to leave the engine frame, but the paint was starting to peel so I gave it the same treatment using Ford Highland green (thanks MM ) from Halford's (chav city ).

Here is the before and after:

I gave all the parts undercoat and lots of layers of paint. The tin of firebox black paint says heatproof to 120 degrees I think.

I'm VERY happy with the results! I regret selling it now.

Please post what you think.

Came up nicely.
Just goes to show that even 'boat anchors' can be brought back to life with a little bit of work.

Dad put it togeher and took it to bits, and poished the boiler (some of it) but I did all the painting with my right arm.

How did you work that deal James.
Bought a boat anchor, and sold it as a restored engine before you even received it.
I'm going to call you Del Boy from now on.

I think it's a fantastic job, James. Sometimes if I do
a nice job like that it makes it harder to let go!

Yeah Chuck. Happened with an SE2a I sold. I had to let go, and it helped because I knew it was for a christmas present for somebody's dad.

I'm real proud of this though
