I have been given the little SL2 a bit of a run this weekend 4 succsessful runs and just went to start the 5th.
On the boiler approaching running pressure I got steam hiss out the side of the steam dome, I removed the heat and gave it a quater turn as I knew it wasn't that tight.
On reheating it leaked worse than before so I removed the flames once again let the pressure down and removed steam dome and replaced O ring.
On attempting to tighten it back up I noticed the bush was turning in the boiler!!!!!!!!
I now need to do a complete strip down, remove boiler and remove site glass and see if I can solder it up from the inside.
If I can't resolder it I'm not going to buy another Mamod boiler I will buy the IP silver soldered boiler that comes with water top up valve, a proper steam regulator and a decent site glass which including postage will cost me 100 pounds. Thats a lot of trcak I could of bought with that money. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Thats bad news, see if you can effect a repair first. What a b*gger!
The IP boiler does sound more man for the job though . . . |

Atleast if I buy the IP boiler then later I can safely fit a gas burner and not worry about meltsing the solder.
I'm totally gutted.
There is no way I'm going to have a complete circle of track and a working loco come christmas now. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Sorry to hear of your problems tmuir, and I too had very similar problems today, one after the other.
Not a good day for steaming in OZ _________________

I think I will end up buying an IP boiler so need to hurry up and finish restoring my SR1 to clear spare on the work bench then respray the base on the mm2 I got off leweis and tidy the rest of the engine up and sell it on ebay OZ to cover part of the cost of the new boiler.
Not happy at all.
I guess I should try and sell original wheels and cylinder of my SL2 to cover some more of the costs aswell. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Went and lit up the BBQ on my decking and had a beer while watching the sunlight slip away whielst cooking dinner and feel a bit better now just trying to decide what to sell.
Already decided old cylinders and wheels off loco and MM2 but that will probably only just cover half the cost still need to find more to sell. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

I will try fixing it first but if I do end up buying a IP one that is silver soldered then at a later date I can safely use a gas burner with it. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

I've just had a suggestion from the 16mmngm yahoo group that I like to fix the bush and will give it a go as this method dont need to strip down the loco.
Clean paint off boiler around bush on the outside and flux
Fill the boiler mostly full and light the burner.
When water almost burning solder up the bush from the outside.
The idea being the near boiling water has already preheated everything so only a small amount of heat is needed to be applyed to melt the solder.
What solder do people use when resoldering?
I have some lead free soft solder but it is really quiet a wide diameter which makes it hard to do fine work and I can not find solid soft solder with a diameter of only 2mm or so. All solder that small has a resin core for electronics which is not what I want. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

It should work in theory! The steam dome will cover the missing paint/solder Tmuir, just make sure you solder it up well enough!
Then find a decent washer and never unscrew it again _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Think you want silver solder, or "plumber's solder", right? _________________ -Chuck
