Another place that is on my 'visit list' is Crossness, like Papplewick & Abbey it is beautifully designed inside and out. I think it is the only other pumping station other than Abbey that has all four beam engines together in one enginehouse, they are also the largest rotative beam engines in the world.

Here is their website:

http://www.crossness.org.uk/

I also found a nice video (not mine) whilst i was browsing youtube:

I was wondering if any members on here have ever visited it?

It amazes me how much detail and artistry was incorporated into English facilities that pumped water and sewage at the time.

Today, at least in the US, such facilities are bland concrete structures...nothing like the beautiful pumping stations you have in the UK.

Wow Philip what a fantastic place - Looks more like a cathederal than a pumping station - From the video alone I would love to have a visit.

I do hope to pay a visit sometime as it does look a wondeful place to have a good gander around, i noticed on the website they are busy doing restoration work and it is good that they have got funding for that and i do hope they get all four of their own engines running in the future. We are very lucky at APS to have all four engines in running order and that is a real credit to the team there and i'm proud to be a very small part of it.

I think we are really lucky in this country to have so many fine places like these pumping stations still around and in steam for people to see and visit.

I've been to the Crossness Engines, and I can thouroughly reccomend a visit. Really awe inspiring stuff. I was flabbergasted at how inticate the decor on the ironwork was, especially for a place that was originally for pumping poo!
Also, if toilets are your thing, there's a museum of all things loo related.   .
