Alright, anyone had this happen??

You see an engine on ebay. For whatever reason, you are unsure if you want to bid.

Eventually, you decide against bidding, then either straight away or later, you regret not bidding.

The current EOTM poll has made me REALLY regret on not bidding.

From my rough memory.
About 18months ago, at Christmas time there was a Marklin 16051 on OZ ebay.
It was either unfired, or fired once. Boxed and all.
Had a starting bid of $800 US. Is was in Australia, but in US dollars.

It ended with no bids, and got relisted I think, at same price.
Again, no bids.

I came close to bidding, but thought it was too expensive, so bought a SR1 from the UK

A week or 2 later, it got relisted for $500US and sold with one bid.

Needless to say, now I am very much

Ouch, that had to hurt.  I've had a few I wish I had bid on (or bid more on), but that Marklin scores right up there in terms of regrets I'm sure.

I was at a train fair a couple of years ago and someone had a boat for sale. It looked very much to be a home build, but a good build, with a Mamod boiler and engine.
He wanted £115 pounds for it which I thought was too high so I never bothered to haggle and therefore went home without it.

I later found out it was a Perico and have regreted not buying it ever since.

When you see that it's very fustrating but got to remember that other bidder may have been willing to go above fair market value in a bidding war.

Really hard when starting bid was never touch and it was very cheap!  Contacted a seller once after an auction but someone beat me to it.

I just wish I had taken up the hobby properly a couple of years earlier, when steam engines were cheap on eBay. We are the victims of our own success with this forum!

No, we can't blame James. But there are certainly more people chasing steam engines that there used to be I'd say.
