Folks,

MM, asked me if I'd be good enough to supply him with the burner dimensions for my early SE3. So in doing so, I thought I'd share them all with you.

When I get 5 minutes, I'll also do the same for the SE4 burner i.e I ran out of time today.

I think the picts speak for themselves but if you have any questions, then give me a shout.

Darren.

And here's the same for the SE4 5 wick burner.

Enjoy.

Interesting to see Darren, wonder why the SE4 tank is smaller but taller than the SE3 one? I believe they changed the burner for the SE4 at some point, looking through the bible it seems that the hobbies ones had your burner and the later mamod ones had an SE3 sized burner

The early Mamods were essentially hand made, probably to no real working drawings . . .

Well i was just comparing the Hobbies SE4 in the bible to the mamod one on the next page and the tank got "squashed" not literally of course

What's interesting is that whilst the two burners look very different in terms of size, there's not that much in it when it comes to the actual volume of meths they're able to hold i.e

from my rough meaurements & using the online calculator below, I calculated the following :-

SE4 - 9.3 Cubic centermetres

SE3 - 9.5 Cubic centermetres

So the SE3 'wins' the capacity title but there's not alot in it.

If you fancy a 'play' here's the site I used :-

I suppose the SE4 burner being taller, but smaller in width is giving the illusion that it doesn't hold as much.

I'm pretty sure they used wider burners, like the SE3 tank with the Mamod SE4's. You have one of the first Hobbies burners. If you look in the bible, you can see your burner with the Hobbies, and the bigger SE3 tank version with the SE4.

Change possible for saving money/time I suppose, use the same tank for both but add a wick?

I dont think there was much engineering science behind the build/design of these burners MM, as it is stated in the Bible, some designs were sketeched on the back of a fag packet. The thing is they seem to have a great cohesiveness to the designs. All the early Mamods vary in detail/size I bet, as they were made in small batches as I say largely by hand.

Either way the majority of them look the same, obviously, we'd need a few burner to compare sizes

& the engine(s) to match

With this info, it shouldn't be too hard to get copies made.

Darren.
