Yeah, it's coming round to lambing time again.
Had the sheep scanner bloke here today. I was really worried that our tup wasn't doing his job this year, he just showed no interest. I couldn't stand the thought of not having any lambs, and I didn't want to swap tups because the one we used is a champion, who would fetch around £1000 at auction.
So, the verdict:-
We're lambing wholly in January. Our first lambing year saw us have our first lamb on February 17th and our last on April 1st. Our record for earliest lamb we've had is the 5th January, with Henry, this year. Although next year, we've got:
-Twins due on January 4th (the mother lambed first time this year, had twins on the day John Reid left)
- Possible twins on January 5th, with one of our home bred gimmers
- Possible twins on January 9th, from Amber, the champion and prize winning ewe who produced Henry this year
- A single from Amethyst on January 26th, who produced Horace this year
- A single from Gabby on January 28th, the sheep who we bought in this year and who hasn't lambed before. She's won a lot of prizes and is one of the best female examples of this breed around.
So, all going well (touch wood!), we should have 7 healthy lambs and 5 healthy mothers by the end of January! _________________ Forum Founder, Owner and Admin.

Isn't this a bit early? I've got fingers (and everything else) crossed, anyway. _________________ Regards

We aim for January 1st lambs mate, so we get them as big as possible for showing. Any lambs that are born in December, however, are meant to be registered as 2009 born, so therefore they can't be shown next year. I'm sure a lot lamb in December and make up a birthday, though.
We might even have some lamb earlier this year. The possible twins are where the lambs were that far developed he couldn't tell _________________ Forum Founder, Owner and Admin.

I wish you the best of luck this year mate.
I know that there were a few heartbreaking moments for you last year.
Lambing is always a stressful time in the country calendar, and the line between success and failure is sometimes very fine.
Growing up in the country, I have the greatest of respect for those who brave the cold and inclement weather to tend to the needs of the flock. You've got to be dedicated for that.
So here's to a good successful lambing mate. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/sandmansteamshack/index.htm

leicester crossed with dorset arent bad eating! sheep are my favorites. i had a small flock in my early twenties... black ..grey and white.. mostly for home spinning. you cant beat homespun wool on a cold windy day drizzling with rain. then there is home butchery!!! been there done that as well! black sheepskin rugs are great! we made some up into ugg boots!! _________________ difficult things done straight away...the impossible takes me a little longer |

Thanks guys!
Yeah, Sandy, it's a shame I don't still have the shepherds hut to lamb with. It'd be good to sleep out with them if I knew they were starting
Still, we've only got a small amount of sheep to lamb.
Have a look at my website, where there's details on our lambing season this year... and also some new updates about breed promotion etc.
If you're bored, have a look

Cheers
Too right, it was bloody awful. However, last year we had 4 from a certain flock in lamb. All of which had problems. One aborted and had to be took to the vets for an injection as she had given up eating, one had a lamb, developed mastitis and the lamb died, one died with lamb/s inside her and the last one had two dead lambs inside, which fell to bits when we pulled them out. She'd been in labour about 12 hours and then after a week or so she died aswell! The two survivors from this 4 haven't carried this year, so hopefully we won't have so many problems! _________________ Forum Founder, Owner and Admin.
