I know that Meths is the majority choice for Mamod and MSS loco's, but does anyone else here use fuel tablets still?
I only ask as I am using Mamod tablets to fuel my SL2, but the tablets burn out really quickly (in about five to eight minutes). Since they have to be cut in half, do the MSS square ones last longer than the Mamod round ones? It seems that you get more pellet for your buck with MSS tablets.
Secondly, I assume that you only use one tablet broken in half in these locos. The one I bought was lacking a manual, but it seems that you can only fit in one broken tablet (going on the width of the Mamod tablets) which I find strange as my TE1a takes two full tablets and would seem rather anaemic on just one. Any advice on the contrary will be muchly appreciated!
If I buy another loco, I will buy a meths burner, but since my SL2 is rare I thought I might as well stick with pellets for now. I may even buy another burner tray as I think I can modify it to hold more fuel anyway (three halves rather than two).

And yes, I am ready for the torrent of 'Buy a meths burner!'

I use solid fuel for one of my loco's!

I just cut one tablet in half. It says in the instructions you get half a boilers run from one tablet before having to refuel.

In my opinion solid fuel is rubbish for loco's! it leaves a mess, it smells, the flame gets smaller and smaller every minute or so.

I think the Mss tablets are just the old Mamod ones stamped MSS

I would definatly stick with meths mate

You shouldn't try cramming more tablet in, there simply is no room!

They aren't the right shape for a loco burner though I don't think you would get a long run on the newer ones

Good for stationarys though Lewis!

Might be worth trying Esbit tablets.

I use MSS tablets in 'Victor'. The MSS ones straight out of the packet light instantly, well, almost! If not, they will be slightly moist. In which case, squirt some meths onto the tablet, that always helps

I did think about that! Anyone here used Esbit? They sound too much like a sweet than a fuel pellet

I knew Meths would be involved in there somewhere

Victor seems to run very well in your vids though, so the pellets can't be all bad. Shame they burn out so quickly.

I use esbit on some of my engines. I find it better than MAmod tablets.

Do they burn any longer than the Mamod ones? Or hotter? Or . . . smell less?

Hmmmm, I'd say they burn a little bit longer.

I think I'll have to try them now, I'll buy some next time I stock up on spares (no one local sells Esbit here )

And on a side note, I discovered today that small blowtorches are great for getting the tablets lit

I buy my Esbit tabs from local camping shops.

Then I cut em into useable bits with a hammer & sharp chisel.

Not pretty, but a pack lasts me for ages.

David.

Ok, I'm going to buy a meths burner for 'Sir Rillian'. With my new SE1, I used the meths burner in my TE1a and giggled madly when I saw the instant transformation into an engine that actually runs continously for 15 mins! I was shocked!
I may just use a standard vap burner in Sovereign too, much more effective than pellets *scoffs and spits in a fuel tablets general direction*

*cleans desk where I missed the tablets*
