Well, the weather finally cleared up enough to take some pics but they aren't as sharp as I'd like. I think I'm going to have to get these damn cataracts done,

The engine is in original condition and has a couple of playworn dints in the brass sides which are suprisingly thin, . Front view showing the burner in place.

Same view with the burner at the base. It's not the original one, well I don't think so as it's made from a small paint tin, but it is made very well and the burner tube actually seems to have been riveted into the top of the tin.

Side view showing engine frame & piston & flywheel set up.

Front view with the decal on the base. The decal is in such a good condition that I'll probably be able to get a scan of it and may get some made

The original model with the added feet has brass end caps but this model definately has copper end caps. I'll try & do some better close-up pics later.

Not much to actually restore , just a good polish up and see, if by a miracle, I can get an original burner. The burner with it really looks professional in the way it was put together so I wonder if it is original. I wonder which model the Powerhouse Museum has, Hmmmm.

Cheers

Chris

Yes, it finally turned up, although I had to go to another Post Office to get it. The seller only addressed it to my street in Toowoomba (no suburb), not realizing that there were 3 othe similar sounding street names and of course the mail sorting centre didn't read it properly sent it to the wrong PO. Just as well it was registered as I was able to track it down, it only took 20 minutes to find where it was once I got the reg numbers. I'm glad I only send/receive things by registered post as it probably would have dissappeared into infinity.

Cheers

Chris

I'm very pleased with it as it's in such good condition, your turn will come. I think there was a very cheap Wilesco going, about GPB 20.00. I think steamgranny & someone else got one. Not sure if the deal is still on or not, try station500, he seems to have the best deals.

Cheers

Chris

Copper end caps thats different.
I need to find another one of these and see if it has copper end caps too. That way we will know for sure if its original or a repair due to the threads stripping the endcap.

I'm putting my money on it being original though.

If you do get some Scorpion decals made I would probably buy a few off you for 'just in case'.

Here is a couple of pictures of the Scorpion that sold on Jan 14 for $485.

The seller says the burner was original but as its the only Scorpion I've seen with a burner I dont know.

If you have a look at page 75 of S,S & S it shows a verticle with a burner in it that could almost be a paint tin so maybe yours is an original burner.

Need to just keep watching ebay till I've seen a few more with same type of burners to know for sure.

As I said in my original post both end caps are copper so I think that it's definately original. No wonder bettersounds one went for so much, all that bright & shiney metal, .

Interesting to see that burner in S,S & S, maybe bettersounds one wasn't original after all. He did say something to me about making my own and showed me some tins that he had there, but didn't actually say that he'd made the one for his Scorpion. What's more interesting is that it's shown in the older engine.

Cheers

Chris
