Hello
Wondering if anyone has a spare MM1 flywheel? The one that came with my MM1 has come to an unfortunate end.....
I have a new, full sized flywheel (which I think is suitable for mobiles) for trade if you are interested or name your price

It came with an unusually large screw - the screw hole thread was broken & so I thought that I would fill with solder, drill and tap and replace the screw with the right one.
Whilst heating the wheel to melt the solder in the hole, the hub literally melted
Subsequent attempts to re-drill the hole and screw thread have failed miserably. _________________ "Knowledge speaks, Wisdom listens" |

Solder is kind of soft to tap also, so in fact it might have worked out for the best in this instance. Hope you find the Flywheel. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

| Well, that didn't work out too good then. I did the same thing with a pulley, so I understand. |

I was surprised at how low the melting temp was - it seems to be some kind of alloy & not pure steel as I would have thought. _________________ "Knowledge speaks, Wisdom listens" |

It is made from Zinc Alloy / Diecast Mazak which has a lower melting point than some solders ( approx 380 - 405°C ).
I found this when trying to solder a broken tab on a piece of Mamod railway track, it just melted like the flywheel mentioned above, before my solder. _________________ Chris Cairns.

When I've drilled and then tapped a new screw hole, invariably the thread in the hole breaks when I tightened the screw on the crankshaft (which was the original problem which started this whole thing). It certainly wasn't overtightened.
May have toi keep my eye out for a spare part MM1 on ebay. _________________ "Knowledge speaks, Wisdom listens" |

| The one that melted easily for me was a pulley for a Weeden 43. Got a replacement though and fixed the other one. |

John - thanks for the offer - I've managed to source a spare flywheel though.
I am however, looking at getting a small model makers lathe for this very thing though - so far I've seen the minitech range and the clisby lathe which is manufactured here in Adelaide.
Any suggestions on which is better or an alternative?
