A fantastic video to inspire Mamod loco modifiers! The chuff pipe is now available for the MSS/Mamod and can be purchased from PPS and Dream Steam. That might just be my next mamodification

Those chuffy things are great! I wonder if one could be put on a model traction engine, like a Wilesco one for example.

G'day all

I would like one for my 5" gauge so it sounds less like a lawn mower.

But then I should be thankful that it has a nice sharp blast, with my inexperienced firing it needs it!

Regards
Ian

the original mamod loco was not re-introduced due to the feeling that we could make a vastly improved small engine . thenew engine is silver solderd ,gas fired and several other improvements .i am not aware of any modifications we have made t o which alan{mamodevon }refures other than the canopy hole.you cannot get any gas fired loco with the out of box performance we offer. i invite you to look at you tube "the new mamod train "       regards mamod

If one was really that concerned about having the steam come out of the chimney on the New Mamod Loco, simply run a pipe around the smokebox from the bottom to the chimney, you would need to drill a hole in the chimney to do it and probably paint the pipe black.
I agree that the new Loco is the best deal out there for what you pay, I love mine and will highly recommended one to anyone who wants a powerful good performing Live Steam Loco especially if you are on a budget.

I agree, after demonstrating *cough* playing with *cough* the sample Forest Classics bought down to the Exeter show there is nothing that can match the ability for a budget loco like this to run essentialy straight out of the box. I only ran it twice on blocks at the show then it did two 20 minute runs on the track.

The original Mamod SL loco design created by Barry Hairs when Mamod was owned by the Malins family was re-introduced under the MSS brand in the 1990's.  This is a well know historical fact familiar to many on this forum.

Roundhouse, Accucraft and Regner might challenge that assertion.

To be positive the new Mamod loco is without doubt a welcome entry into the live steam market where the only developments in recent years have tended to be in the £1,000 plus price band.  This one offers more choice in the sub £500 price band and fits in nicely with the MSS and has increased interest in the hobby, which has to be a good thing.

We have certainly noticed an increase in sales of the MSS loco this year so there is clearly demand for both and possibly others in this cheaper end of the market during these tough economic times.  Any company launching a new range in this climate has to be applauded and encouraged.

The new Mamod is being seen by those within the trade as having good potential particularly as it is indeed a nice little power unit for the money but it is not yet being made widely available to the trade, which is a shame as it would gain far bigger market exposure if it were.

Judging from the feedback I received at the Exeter Show at the weekend the opinion amongst the established hobbyists is that it has more potential as a power unit for kit bashing as its aesthetic appearance is rather toy like, especially the rolling stock.  Having said that, if it is aimed at the toy end of the live steam market its looks may be more appealing there.

As far as design changes are concerned, one can only reference the proverbial 'grapevine' and gossip in the trade.  I don't have any inside knowledge but have heard the design is to have a few changes and improvements. As with any live steam product there is a whole cottage industry waiting to create enhancements and bits and pieces so owners can make their loco into their own unique model and embark on various projects.  It becomes difficult to settle on a design for a new add-on until one is confident the base design is not about to change.

Improvements that have been suggested by experienced modellers in the trade and 16mm NGM world include steam exiting through a reproportioned chimney, eye rings on the portholes, a more secure gas pipe than the current plastic one that tends to pull out easily, and repositioning the steam pipe away from the water sight glass.  I also hear a R/C unit is in the pipeline from one company.  Also, if Mamod were to release just the power unit like Accucraft did with the Edrig I think they would be on to a winner amongst the mainstream live steam market.

However, we (traders) are waiting to see if Mamod will be releasing this fine product to the trade.  I understand the current position is it will not be yet, if at all.  This is a shame as Dream Steam and others would indeed like to add this loco to the product range, not to compete with MSS or other brand models, but to compliment the offering and add more choice.  We are ready when Mamod are...

It is suprising how a simple looking device makes such a big difference to the sound of the loco.
