Hi Men,
I know many of you have an understandable distain for new Meccano. I have this same distain, but it did not stop me from buying their largest set for my kid.
In all fairness, many of the structural peices are true to orginal form and just as solid as the originals. For me the biggest remaining plus is that this Meccano set is still made in France and not china......
Here is a vid of the chopper with counter-rotating blades:

Nothing wrong with that T.O.
Like you, I also dislike the new Meccano, but seeing that vid shows it still has the same idea, and a good way to get the kids off the computers and video games _________________

with boy back here nothing seems to compete with TV and PlayStation
we have meccano/ marklin/ temsi/steam toys/clockwork trains/
thomas the tank trains battery/lego basic and lego tecnics (sp) with memory module/control panel/ plus assorts of other toys and live in the country on farm and he would rather still sit in front of TV and annihilate some imaginary enemy or crash cars |

That must be tough. My son is still only 6 and is naturally drawn to violence and destruction. The first words he spoke were not mama/papa but ATTACK and DESTROY.....I am completely serious.
He has buildt and laid waste to countless complex structures and castles during prolonged pitch battles of Playmobile figures
That said, you are in a "genie out of the bottle situ"..... We strictly limit TV to an hour a day and prohibit violent fantasy/monster toys etc. (he does have a few guns pistols and swords though which are his favorites) and I do not allow or encourage him to play on the computer.
Easy for now I know, as we cannot control what happens at his friends and outside the home..... What I am saying is that you did not do anything wrong. It's often what happens outside the home that creates these habits in children.
Don't worry, I am sure your son will outgrow the gaming age

As we all know, it is not always a pleasure playing with small children compared to doing other things.....
That said, Kids are a one shot deal. You have one chance per child to put in as much positive influence as you can before they reach the age where they prefer their friends' company to your company.
It's not a very long time really.
The most valuable thing you can give any child is your time. There is simply no toy, game, trip to amusment park or other substitute that will do any good in comparision to quality time spent together.
