Been on here a few weeks so I suppose I should introduce myself.

My real name is Steven and i'm 25 next month. I live just outside Belfast and have 2 favourite football teams - Glentoran (my local team), and Arsenal (who I have supported since I was in primary school. Im about average to small height (cant b bothered measuring) and an overweight 13 stone (mainly due to the fact that I'm doing some serious comfort eating lately). I am employed by one of the large supermarket multiples and they are a pack of barstewards . Don't have a car or house or anything because i dont get paid enuff!

Anyways, got my first Mamod when i was in p6 (which means i was about 9) after my teacher brought in his TE1. Once I saw it running I had to get one and so talked my Dad into helping me pay for one (a TE1a). It was £120 which is a lot of money for a 9 year old!!!!!! Unfortunately, being 9 years old and very into things like computers and music and stuff the Mamod got neglected often and eventually ended up stashed in a Safeway carrier bag a few years later after the whole thing caught fire during the "Great Firelighter Incident". I came across it again about a month ago and got bitten by the steam bug. After getting some advice on here I cleaned it up and have just resprayed and treated the rusty firebox (which involved learning to rivet for the first time). I now own an SR1, an SE1, a SW1 plus my orignal TE1A. My dad also got another TE1A (a 70's model) which I am looking after for him . On the way (I hope) is an SE2a and WS1 workshop which I got extremely cheap on ebay! Hopefully I will find more bargains when my cashflow improves (it isn't cheap this hobby!)

Anyways, enjoying my new hobby and hopefully the collection will continue to grow (so long as my wallet can hold out to it!).

I know what you mean about the cost of collecting.
Mine has just reach critical mass and I'm going to need to sell a few things to provide money for other items that are much rarer and sort after.

It amazes me that still every week I see a new model or brand I never knew existed before.

And it doesn't stop. I've been collecting for a good few years and still seem to keep finding models to add. My suggestions.
1) Collect to a theme. Lots of fun and helps give direction to a growing collection.
2) Set yourself a monthly allowance and don't spend more than that. and
3) Buy your engines one at a time. Don't get another one until the one you have just paid for is 'back at home, cleaned, played with, and added to the collection'.

I don't manage to stick to any of these rules but..... I just blame the forum.

Excellent tips Manxman. Pretty much what I manage to do, except with 3.. Haven't bought one for nearly 2 months, due to last one making a dent in my mamod fund

I'd like to add, buy with the intention of keeping, unless it's a bargain, and you can sell on (works well selling on in OZ).

Anyway Tarby, welcome mate

Welcome mate.

Nothing more to add except to warn of a Bowmanitis infection.

Very destructive to the bank balance and can be contracted from this forum.

An official unofficial welcome Steve, your a bit like me in that we had both been on a while before we 'fessed up. You seem to be enjoying yourself, keep right on doing it.

I'd like to keep to Mamxman's rules, but I'm afraid I've got a very bad case of Mamoditis which, unfortunaley is much more common than Bowmanitis

Cheers

Chris

Hi Tarby (Steven),

Good to learn a bit more about you. Although I am from the states (Indiana specifically), I had the pleasure of visiting Belfast about 6 years ago...lovely GREEN everywhere, found it to be a beautiful place.

You've gotten all the helpful advice on budgeting for your collectables so I won't repeat...most of us follow such advice til we see that "must have" and buy it regardless. I do try another technique that seems to work for me. I limit myself to a certain amount of shelf space...when I can't fit another thing in, eBay relieves me of shelf congestion and provides a bit of funding for the next must have. I get ruthless at times...recently selling 17 items including engines, parts, pieces and even a box!!! Of course I spent every penny on new acquisitions, but that keeps the hobby interesting.

Welcome again, have enjoyed following your posts.

cheers,
Roger

Already doing that. Gonna have to do a bit or "room reconfiguration" to get any more in

Thanks for the comments guys. Se2 and WS1 arrived today. Have had my first soldering experience as well which went better than expected as it was leaking at the copper pipe - boiler joint

Welcome to the forums!

I started collecting in late December last year, I've been trying to limit myself to buying one engine a month. It's still April but I seem to have bought 7 engines this year already.

I've already got my eye on a purchase for May
