A while ago of ebay I bought a Te1a for a resonable price.
On receiving it I realised why.
Someone had jammed a wood screw in the overflow hole and knackered the thread and the bush for the whislte and fallen out.
Once I realised you couldn't easily open the boiler on the TE1a I put it on the back of the shelf to be looked at one day..
Enter Manxman who offered me a partial Te1a for free!
So now I can restore my TE1a.
The boiler, firebox, smokebox and chimney are all compliments of Manxman the rest is the good parts of my Te1a.
The boiler came fitted with the engine mounting which had been badly resoldered and the lip to hold the reversing lever was damaged so I've removed it and will use mine.
I've decided to just polish the boiler as you can see there is no paint left on it, will strip the paint from engine bracket to match the boiler.
I will try and clean up the chrome and if it comes up ok will leave it on else I will use the new chrome cover I have.
Below is a picture of all the parts.

When I was 13 and visiting my grandfather in Sydney (I live in Perth about 4000km away) and he took me to a hobby shop that had an SA1 and a Te1a in it and I wanted one ever since.
Fast forward 20 years and this year whilst I was in the UK bought an SA1 which is boxed in great condition and my sad Te1a.
Need to fix the Te1a to complete my boyhood wish.

Great to see the boiler matched up again with the rest of an engine. It's always good to see another engine resurrected and better 'polished' and working than left in bits or throw out.
Look forward to seeing the finished engine.

It may of been it was a long time ago but it may of been a shop up in Newcastle as we went for a trip up there too.

Here is the finished product.
I haven't steamed it yet, I will be after posting this.
Heres hoping I've got no leaks and it runs.
I went to the steamfest this morning in Perth and spent this afternoon restoring the engine.
Not bad for a Sunday afternoons work.
I discovered today that engine degreaser works real well for removing soot and gunge from inside the firebox. Just make sure you buy one that states it will not damage paint.
The chrome cleaned up real well so used the original one.
I still need the spring for the front suspension and haven't figured out what I'm going to do with the canopy yet as I don't want to paint it but haven't figured out how to remove rust without hurting the paint.

Are you going to paint it after it's proved itself as a runner tmuir? I hope to see a vide of it running  and also some pics from railfest

Real nice and looks good polished. Like the brass boiler, chimney cowl thing and think it will look better without a canopy.
Hope it runs alright but all in all,very nice.

Decided against painting it as to do it properly would have to remove the boiler from fire box which would mean ordering copper rivets from UK for it.
I've just ran it for the first time and once I've editted the vid will put it up.
Will give details of run when I put vid up.
Didn't actually get any pics of the railfest as the camera was in the wife's bag and just when I thought of getting it Thomas (my 2 year old son) got bounced on in the bouncy castle, he was tired sore and hot so it was decided it was time to go.
The railway club had their G scale out in force but mostly electric.
When I join I will boost thier live steam by 200 percent. (They only have one live steam at the moment.)

Great resto tmuir.
I agree, probably easiest to leave it the colours it is.
Good to know degreaser works. I have some that doesn't hurt paint too.
I know carby cleaner works well, but damages paint, I tried that before
