Is there anywhere I can get new steel replacement mamod loco wheels from that look the same as the existing wheels?
I have seen the PPS wheels and don't really like the spoked or disc wheels, I would like the balance weight as per the existing wheels. I have a loco where the wheels are starting to suffer from many miles of running!

| Sadly you can only get the two you've already listed. But aslong as you drift paint in to wheels centre, and leave the tyre rim exposed steel, it should look ok. |

There was once available a limited number of cast iron wheels that looked identical to the original Mamod. These were made by a company that specialised in doing cast iron wheels for 0 and gauge one locos. I think someone commisioned them to do a batch, as besides that they did nothing else for mamods.
One of the distictive features of these wheels was they actually had a square hole, which matched the square end of the axles they came with. The ends of the axles were threaded 6 BA and countersunk screws held the wheels on. No chance of these beauties slipping on the axles, plus it makes dismantling the loco much easier if you can just unscrew the wheels !!
I cannot unfortunately remember the company. However, I guess if sufficient interest was shown, or if someone was brave enough to order their minimum order quantity, then one of todays suppliers might be prepared to run off some cast iron wheels.
A quick google came up with these guys who might be able to make some:
AGH Miniature Engineering, 12 Fford Argoed, Mold,Cheshire, CH7 1LY - 01352 700062.
Unfortunately they do not have a web page, and I bet they won't be cheap! _________________ It's a Mamod Jim, but not as we know it!

I presume they have to be steel rather than the alloy Mamod ones that PPS do. I have steel wheel and to be honest the weight difference is not significant enough to amke a difference on something a loosely engineeried as a Mamod loco. MD _________________ www.mamod-steam-railway.co.uk

The weight is probably not significant, but there are two issues with PPS/Mamod wheels,
Firstly they work loose. Yes it is possible to get a punch and re-seat them, but with the sort of use we give them they may work loose again.
Secondly, they can wear out, particularly the front pair which carries most weight. I have seen quite a few Mamod wheels 'double flanged', but it does take quite a lot of running to do this !! _________________ It's a Mamod Jim, but not as we know it!

| The deeper flanges on I.P wheels certainly help. |

They certainly do.
Have a look here for the speed a Mamod can do around corners if you change the wheels and gauge.
