Now at a first glance the whistle looks like its lost its arm and or lever, whatever you want to call it and someone has put a plastic end on the top so you can still use it.

Now when i took a closer look at it, it appears that the platic bit is actually built into the whistle and will not come off or out.

I have seen these before on models and presumed they were bodge ups! I think these could be prototype whistles. The ere of the engine fits! around 72 as there no SW1 holes in the firebox, round about the time mamod changed from the old whistles to the spring type?

Food for thought gentlemen

Yes Steve, in principle they are exactly the same as the normal lever versions. You simply push the plasic top down and it will operate.

You can't pull the plastic bit off either, because it's built into the whistle!

It's interesting..

If you can see the plastic top. It has a bigger hole than the regular spring whistles. As you know, they have a small and very thin brass stick poking out. This whistle has a bigger opening otherwise this plastic button simply wouldn't fit inside the whistle.

It definatly hasn't been thrown together, and I've definatly seen at least another 1 or two like this before, obviously thought nothing of it. Since I have one closer to inspect I can see it looks original.

It's strange... but yet very interesting

It does look original judging by the joint to the boiler.

I really do think it is original, like you said the era of the engine all ties up.
Another Mamod anomoly

Yes, not mentioned in the bible or anything I've seen/read. Strange that these small things, (major to us) have been missed, and some of the things really need to be mentioned now.
