This is my Renown Verticle just barely ticking over, it is leaking large amounts of steam between the cylinder face and portface due to the portface been uneven. Will be relapping it to fix this.

If you listen closely between my son whining to come into the room I was steaming this in you will hear the large amounts of steam hissing out.

The engine still requires a lot of work yet but aleast I managed to make it run on the 1st of Jan like I wanted to.

Well it runs Tony, at least it's a good start.

I have a sanding block for port faces etc, so I can get them perfectly level.

Noticed the SL2 in the background too

I have a large glass sheet I got for lapping my wood planes and chisels that I use.
The trouble with the renown is the port face is just a sheet of brass so it is real easy for it to get bent out of shape and real hard to put back into shape.

The engine will never look like new but I should atleast be able to get it running better and cleaned up a lot better than it is now.

As long as it runs well Tmuir! that's the important thing

I like the look of it already, looks very 'aged' and used

Yes its had a hard life and thats just the last 20 years I owned it, god knows what it went through the previous 40 years before that.

I was amazed how much these little engines sell for, have only seen 3 on ebay in the last 6 months.
Two were missing piston and cylinder and they each went forabout $150 and $250 , the one complete one for nearly $350!!

Well, it runs better than I thought from your description! It looks and sounds good too. It'll really fly when you've lapped it!

Yep, you've done a good job there Tony.

I look forward to seeing it run under a full head of steam.

If you have an arbor press, maybe like a 5 ton (small as they get) you can easily streighten it out.

Not that simple as it has two 1/4 circle identations raised from the plate that the cylinder face runs on so using a press to straighten the plate would squash flat the raised areas making it even worse.
I think I've got it pretty straight now, just needs a few mins with 800 W&D to fix it now.

Lapped the port face, its better but still leaks a lot.
The cylinder face really needs lapping but its the type that has the shaft soldered into the cylinder with just a nut that screws on to retain the spring so you cant really do it.

The Renown is a nice engine and has some good features like cast brass flywheel and a boiler with centre flue to speed up bringing water to boil, but really is the cheaper cousin to the scorpion in regard to build quality
