Hi,
This is my first posting, so any advice welcome.
I am currently restoring a old SR1 (Held together by screw fixings).

The big problem I have got it is the really badly rusted fire box. After a good clean removing the rust all the chrome has gone leaving a badly pitted rusty steel cover.

The question is what do I do next, to try and reclaim the original fire box to it's former glory?

I was thinking of re-painting with heat resting paint as a base coat and finish it with a bright chrome (radiator) paint?

Any advice / help welcome? Thanks JOHN

It is possible to get them rechromed for a reasonable price but any pitting in th metal will stand up something terrible once rechromed.

Are you trying to restore to increase its value or just to get it to work?

If you are not that fussed about the value just buy a new chrome cowl.
The new ones have extra holes in them as they are used for the steam wagon aswell but will still fit your older model.
You can get them on ebay or from Forest Clasics.

The firebox gets pretty hot and any paint that isn't heat resistant you will find will burn pretty quickly on it.

Oh and welcome to the forum

Thanks tmuir,

It works OK, I suppose I'm really trying to increase its value. But also for nostalgic reasons this was the first mamod / steamer roller I was given for Xmas over 40 years ago!. (I think I was about 8 or 10 years old at the time.)

I'm trying to keep to the original parts. (I have some pic's but don't currently know how to down load them, so any help on downloading pic's would aslo help).

To upload photos just join photobucket.
Look at question 4 in this FAQ
http://modelsteam.myfreeforum.org/about2453.html

If you need to repaint the black part of the firebox I would recommend using VHT brake caliper paint or if you cant get that VHT engine enamel, just make sure to bake the paint to make it heat proof.

That's a nice SR1!

I rubbed mine with wet and dry paper, and it came off, then I brasso-ed it.

Welcome to the forum mate!

lucky for you the actual black firebox frame is rust free. Its a devil to find an authentic plug firebox these days, and I had to replace mine with a water gauge box. Still even that was reasonably authentic for a 70s TE1A.

Oh and guess what? No sooner had I repaired my firebox and got it all back together, did a good spare plug firebox appear on ebay?

Welcome to the forum John! That's a very nice engine that you have there. I'd go along with James's suggestion and try some wet or dry paper.

I would try the Wet and Dry and if it did not work I would then resort to a new piece of chrome. The rest I would carefully restore, I love those Mamod Rollers.

If worst comes to worst - rub it down and paint it with silver enamel ?
