Hi to all, this is my first post

I recently pulled out my childhood SE2a and gave it a little run. Boy did that bring back the memories!

Further poking around revealed two lumps of loose solder rattling around in the boiler. A few minutes of upside down jiggling released both though an open fitting. Now I am considering a full off renovation of the engine. I have all of the skills needed from mechanics to machining and soldering, but I must admit that I am stumped

Could someone please tell me what the small fitting (ie hole) is inside the chimney I am not refering to the return steam lines, but the thing attached directly to the top of the boiler.

Thanks for your feedback.
Jeff

Hi there Jeff, welcome.

Hole inside the chimney, as if you were looking right down into it?

If it is Id say it say it was the rivet hole holding the chimney on!

The chimney is pop riveted on. Do you desperatly need to remove it? or is it loose?

I've fixed a few loose ones in my time.... but if it's not loose then don't take it off. Simply because you can't get a pop rivet gun down the chimney

Welcome to the forums by the way enjoy your stay

Do you mean the hole in the side of the chimney, near the bottom? If so, the exhaust pipe from the cylinder should feed into it.

If you mean the one in the bottom of the chimney, that should have a pop rivet in it holding it to the boiler. If the rivet is missing then the engine won't run.

Welcome to the forum.

Wow, thanks for the prompt replies and kind welcome

Yes, it is the rivet

It isn't loose or otherwise causing concern, just not sure what I was looking at. Good point regarding rivet tool access, I'll remember that.

I live outside of Vancouver, British Columbia, Sandman.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi Jeff,
Welcome, come in, and be at peace...but don't let your significant other know about this...there's too much fun here for you, and you know how they hate that.
