After a long wait my SEL Major twin cylinder will be delivered in the next couple of days.  Unfortunately the whistle is jambed open and I will have to put a drop of solder on the bottom of it so I can run the engine.  The whistle handle is also missing.

If anyone has one to swap for some Mamod spares or for sale please PM me.

Cheers

Chris

Are you sure it can't be fixed?
If just the handle is missing could you get a new one made?
Maybe a better option is to just get a bolt to screw into the whistle bush for running and keep the whistle and try and get it fixed.

Thanks for the suggestions Tony,  i've been told that it is really jambed, I guess that  i should wait and see if any of our ususal tricks like dunking it in boling water will help.

The other thing to d ois to get a few of our meembers who are attending ST1A to keep an eye out and see if anyone is selling any SEL spares as I wouldd reaslly like acomplete whistle to go wioth the engine.

Cheers

Chris

Sounds like they have done the same as myself recently, and broke the handle/valve whilst trying to remove the whistle from the boiler.

The whistle handle and valve are all one piece, with a slot being cut into the handle to allow the steam through. This is then just punch fitted into the whistle lower body (sorry no photos but I've not got a digital camera with good macro facility yet).

I've just tried an experiment with my 2nd SEL 1550 that may help you. The whistle thread is the same size as the water level plug, so if you PM Barry1946 who makes replica SEL water level plugs he should be able to tell you the thread size you will require to blank off this boiler insert.

I was lucky to get another whistle bottom half from another Forum member so have repaired this whistle. And I already have had another Forum member enquiring whether I have spares available, including a whistle.

SEL spares are difficult to come by - I need 2 pistons to get that 2nd 1550 going again.

Good luck with your search.

Just hold your finger over it while it's running.

Thanks Nick and Les, for the information, I just missed out on the boxed one on ebay.

MM and Rob,  just make sure you both don't get one for me, although spares never go amiss,

Cheers

Chris

Hi, i am also after a whistle for my SEL, as CCairns knows

Someone, I think IndianaRog has made handles by putting wooden dowels into a drill chuck and sanding down until the correct size, seems like that may be the way to go Flywheel61

Another thought for the pistons is to have some made, they actually look pretty basic construction, and there are members on here who would be likely to be able to make them.
