Hi all,

Being as it is probably 20 years since I have seen a Mamod engine up close, I was wandering if there are any fundamental differences between a meths burner & a solid fuel burner, ie: Is the only difference the burner tray that the enginge comes with, or does each tray only sit comfortably in it's own type of engine?

Would it be easy to convert a solid fuel burner to a meths burner (by buying a new tray), or should I only bid on meths burners? (as meths is what i'm after).

Cheers,

TSC.

The mobiles or roller would be ok as all they did was change the burners over. But if you want a meths burner one then buy a meths burner one, its easier!

TSC . . .

Solid fuel burner for SP5/6

The equivalent meths burner . . .
For an SE3.

Note some engines will not take an older meths burner due to firebox aperture restrictions.

Some smaller meths burners . . .

If you are unsure post a message here!
In generalmeths is better and hotter, although it has been reduced in its ability to create a hotter heat source due to addatives.

Hi SPOKESMAN, thanks for taking the time to sort out & post some pictures to answer my question, I hadn't realised that the burner trays came in different sizes - although I think that MM has pointed me in the right direction here: 'CLICKY'. Although the auction has another 5 days to run (& no 'Buy It Now' Grrr ). I've had a look at a few places online (Mamodonline etc), but they don't seem t stock the meths trays.

Cheers,

TSC.

This been bugging me for some time...can't you buy sterno in UK? I just bought an SP2 and it came
with the tablet tray, I hate those tablets, but no problem...I just loaded it up with sterno and
got 13 min runs. Methanol Gel, or Sterno...I never hear it mentioned in the forum?!

love the leprecaun, TSC.

My time for a "stupid" question (and James is right, no such thing here) -

What's Sterno??

As others have mentioned, there are differences.
Also, to convert a solid fuel burner to meths would be difficult. As they aren't "water tight" they would require some work to hold meths, and also, they aren't real deep.

In other words, it's not really worth it.

I have made a couple of meths burners from brass. One for my SE3, the other for my boat.

Also, I know you can't fit a meths burner into a SP5 engine. Firebox opening is too small

Forsteam and others do sell meths burners for newer SP type engines. They don't look the best

Here are some on ebay. Be cautious of the size. Some mention the size, and seem to be quite small.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Meth-burner...QcmdZViewItem?hash=item5958634779

And finally, I don't mind the look of these ones. This guy actually has some more on his site, which have an adjustable flame via a cover which I think could be real handy to get a slow speed from an engine

Good luck with it

Sterno is just a brand name...the one shown here is called Fancy Heat...it's the same stuff restaraunt buffets use to keep the buffet trays heated, or some use it to heat fondue pots...

Interesting chuck, I've never seen it before.

We have similar stuff here, but it's more a liquid than a gel, used for starting BBQ's

Not this stuff, Wallace. It's about as thick as the grape jelly you'd put on toast. The only drawback I
see is it leaves a crusty ash residue on the burner which from time to time needs to be scraped off.
I pay a dollar per can here at the Dollar Stores and you can get a good 8-12 firings out of one can.
I've never had it run or smear or cause any problems!

Wow, not a bad price at all. I might keep a lookout for it.
It might allow me to get a solid fuel fired engine then
