Hi,
Can anyone help me? I found my dads early 1950s TE1, and i have just started it going again. I found that with some oil, it ran perfectly, but everytime i attached the driving band, it stopped working.i spin the drivewheel, and it spins about 3 times and then it stops. Also, i see some steam and water escaping from the saftey valve when i am running the engine with the drive band attached....
Thanks |

You will get some steam out the safety valve when running.
That is normal, you are just producing more steam than you are using.
When you start the Te1, try lifting the back wheels off the ground until it gets some momentum up that sometimes helps.
If that doesn't work make sure all the wheels are oiled and are not stiff.
They also only really like to drive on level ground.
Lino, tiles or wood floors are the best for it to drive on.
If you still cant get it going check for steam leaks where cylinder meets engine mount and that nothing is binding.
Failing all that it could be the piston is worn out.
Does it have a forward reverse lever or not? _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

No, it dosnt have a forward reverse lever, i will try what you suggested, thanks for the help. Can you also help me with the drive bands, and what they should be like, becasue this one being 45 years old might have something to do with it? |

Replace the seals first then run it. Run it stationary for a while then put the band on it. Make sure the band isn't too tight or it will bind! If its binding stretch it a bit _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Did you over stretch the drive band? Try and compress it a bit by pinching it togther! Make sure everything that moves is oiled, piston cylinder and flywheel etc
What surface is the TE1 running on? _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Welcome to the forum Scorpionfire.
TEs were not introduced until 1963!
Has the chaps advice helped you?
Love to see some pictures!

| Its runnning on quarry tiles. I tried again, and the Wheel now turns with the driveband, but only when it is held above the ground. As soon as i put it on the ground, it stops. |

you must be losing a lot of pressure from somewhere, it might need new seals! _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Safety valve where the valve touches the boiler, you should see no steam or water leaking, Also at the top of the safety valve it might need a small o ring replacement, Whistle same place as safety valve aswell, even the overflow you should see no leaks!
Are there any visable leaks? _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Yes check to see if steam is coming out anywhere.
If between the cylinder and engine mount frame they may need lapping.
It is possible the seals have gone on the safety valve and it is releasing pressure sooner than it should.
Remove the piston and put a drop or two of oil on it and that will improve the seal there and may give you a bit more power.
Also while the piston is out give the flywheel a spin.
It should carry on spinning for a few seconds with nothing connected to it. If it doesn't have a look at what is creating friction.
Don't expect the TE1 to break any land speed records but it should be able to propel itself. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

| Ok, thanks for the help, I will try these things. I just ordered a new saftey valve, becuase i looked at it really closely, and found that the rubber seals have practically disintegrated. |

There's your problem then, you shouldn't see any visable steam loss from any of the fittings, unless the safety valve is popping up
