|
|
Hello, I have posted an early link to a vid (no sound) of the test run of my new Mamod loco yesterday.
Go to my website and look under NEWS.
Like every Mamod loco, she will need some attention to seals and a new higher pressure valve. Whilst these new design locos have a silver soldered copper boiler, they come with the standard 10 psi SV. This means they just don't get enough pressure up to pull the extra weight, plus the piston blosks leak steam through every joint. They are clamped together with thin paper gaskets, and the oil pot caps have very thin and usless O rings. Even replacing these with thicker ones made a huge difference. I will seal the piston joints with gasket sealer for next time. Whilst this sounds bad, some more experienced member of the live steam rail world suggest this and it works of other live steam engines such as Astors and Roundhouse locos.
I will do a photo review of loco and some more vid later in the week when I have more time and a review and vid of fitting the IP high pressure boiler to Pandora.

Well I must say that its performance out of the box doesn't impress. Sir Rillian (an SL2) ran better than that when I first got him, and he leaked from the sight glass!
Does look like a nice loco, but if it can't be made to run well without buying more extras then I don't reckon it'll be worth it. If you're paying £150 or so fair enough, but over £200? Seems a bit cheeky to me.
Looks like it's nice to own but a bugger to run! _________________ Worrying the populace since '82' |

Looks nice.
Just a thought. You know you have the gas tank in the tender. Try it in the cab. The heat in the cab should keep the gas tank warmer and increase the gas pressure wich will make the burner burn better and make steam better _________________ www.steamyjim.piczo.com

I have just spoken with Carole at Mamod. She tells me that the early Jubilee loco had some problems running and that the latest Williams have had some updates based on the lessons learnt from the early ones. So my experience may not be giving a fare perspective on the current model.
I am hopeful that I can get the upgrades from Mamod to make my early Jubilee loco work. My one is number 004 and there for is likely to be one of the ill fated ones.
I also asked about the Harry rocket mentioned in another thread. The one pictured that looks more like a Stevenson's Rocket was a mockup for marketing. The pictures were released but they never got it to work well, and this model never made to the shops. It was redesigned and released as the version we see today with the piston on top.
Also spoke with Martin at MSS today. Can't say too much but they are very much commited to the Railway range with plans that will keep enthusiasts happy!

The 4th ever made?
I wouldn't steam that bugger, it'd be in a glass cabinet somewhere! _________________ Forum Founder, Owner and Admin.

The lubricator would of been put in the hands of Royal Mail today so at the current speed mail is moving in the UK you should have it by January. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm
