I leave whistles open and SV loose to help dry out the boiler after use.
Only engine I don't do that on is my Jensen 51 replica which I leave with water in the boiler for the next run.

That's how I understood the question ACE
Sometimes I will run an engine and it might be months before I run it again...definitely want to let the boiler air out and dry out in between runs.
My 51R has not been drained dry in 3 years...it's a heavy gauge boiler and I only use distilled...it stays half full continously. Otherwise I would be throwing out a half gal of water every time I ran it and I run it several times a week.

I make sure mine are dry before storing now, by pumping air through the boiler for a few days to encourage them to dry out (forces moisture saturated air from the boiler and pumps in drier stuff).
Spare water I siphon out into a second water jug and re-use it next time, since it's no more dirty than the boiler is. If I've run a particularly old and grubby engine I don't keep the water, since it'll have some dissolved calcium in it.... So I suppose I should have just said that I keep the water if it's from a boiler that I know is clean - new or cleaned out by myself.

AFter running my engines I empty the boilers and leave the whistle and safety valves off, after about 2 weeks (or when I remember) I screw them loosely back on to keep dust out of the boiler and stop them getting lost.

Empty an valves opened/removed whether it's for a week or longer.
I also blow compressed air through them to help get the moisture out

Greg, I personally clean and dry them up of all water and oil drippage and re-oil the linkages etc. for storage.
I only apply steam oil til just before use. BTW...don't put any oil in the boiler...it gums up sight glasses and can turn to little tar balls in the boiler bottom...just leave boiler clean and dry.

I think the other guys have covered this pretty well. I do much the same. Empty, run a bit of air through to expel any remaining in the system. Wipe everything down, leave SV loose or out.

| Same as pretty much everyone else, the I stick the engine on the oil filled radiator in my shed to dry the boiler out. |

Same here, open and empty, except the Ruby. With one opening, not two, it is hard to get water to drain (no way for air to get in), so I leave water in there for the most part. Next run I fill it all the way up and then siphon off the top 10-15 mL to get it to the appropriate run level (no sight glass  ). It has a copper boiler though, so dezincing is not really an issue.
