I've wanted to give this a try, so finally did. This vertical engine normally runs quite well on Esbit via slide in tray...very typically Wilesco. Turns some good rpms, but also will sit steady on bench top with Esbit fire.

Instead, I tried it today with a Bowman M135 Meths burner...
3 1/2 " long burner tube. Needed to prop the end of the tank up to keep it level, but otherwise the tube just slid right in the normal Esbit tray supports which actually kept it pretty straight and prevented wandering.

I found the RPM's were more than I ever got on Esbit, so much more I needed to screw it down to a piece of plywood or it danced right off the table. At least 7-8 minutes burn time on the Bowman burner and as video shows, it put out some serious heat and serious revs. Very pleased with it, will glitze it up a bit with a better wood base and incorporate a little burner shelf...but this proves the concept. No wonder you guys are always raving about meths vs. Esbit...dang stuff IS better...just need a workable burner.

Check it out:

cheers,
Rog

Great vid, Rog. Good to hear your voice...you could be an anchor man on the news!
Tell you what, my first thought was if you put a propeller on it WOULD fly.
That was before you opened the throttle!!

Honestly it almost scared me into thinking it was gonna blow, but just good solid heat really made it fly. Why didn't I try this before?

Now I need to make something up for a permanent Meths burner to use in several Esbit fired engines...something with a square tank would fit best and look better than the Bowman one...but it proved the idea will work for sure.

cheers,
Rog

Rog, is it the normal Wilesco burner slide?

If it is I can get you a meths burner to fit.

Meths is a better/hotter fuel. The D455 has a smaller heated surface too so thats pretty damn good performance - I may try that with mine!

YES...I just slid out the usual burner tray that comes with it and stuck the 3.5" long Bowman tube between the rails...no mods to the Wilesco at all. Only thing I had to do was make a little wood block for the tank to sit on with a couple of nails in the block to prevent burne from vibrating out since nothing is holding it in place.

Are there meths burners out there that are actually meant to slide inside the Wilesco rails without flatening the rails??
