Bought this engine off UK ebay some time ago.
It came along with a wilesco TE.
I sold the TE to a UK member and I only paid the postage (of the SEL) to me...so this one can be stated as "free"

It was in a very sorry state.
Almost 80% of teh whole paint was gone.
Boier was badly resoldered and steam pipe and dome were broken off.
Also the gasifiers were missing, but as this forum is so great, a member helped me and made two repro's for me. Thanks again

I repainted the engine as good as I could.
The engine's base was originaly painted orange-red.
Is this a rare paint variation? I did not see such models before (just green ones)

Here are the pictures!

Red bases are less common than the green ones. I'm not sure if that's the original shade of red, though. The ones I've seen have been the same shade as the flywheel. Maybe some of them were a more orangey red.

We.., this was the closes colour i could buy.
It was more orange than red, so i decided to paint it in this orange colour.
The flashlight migth make it a bit brighter than it is actually.

Another intesting thing to point out:
It seems this engien never had the SEL badge.
When i unmantled the whole engine i discovered the tiny holes for the badge were completely covered with the original red-orange paint.

Also I saw a few green paint spots here and there, located at the edges of the base....
I wonder how they came there?
Maybe two engines, this and a green one, sat next to each other in the factory, with the paint still a bit wet?

Very nice restoration there Mirko!

My "SEL", (now sold on), was a Merit. Complete with holes & no badge.......

Mine's a very red red, the same as the flywheel:
http://rolywilliams.com/sel_standard.html
It's possible that different batches of paint were used.

Red paint is notorious for fading or changing colour with time, but you'd expect the flywheel to do the same. The paint on the bottom should be closer to the original, and that under the engine frames and firebox flanges should be almost as new.

Another great restoration Mirko - have you had it running yet? The SEL "standard" has to be my favourite SEL (it's the only one I kept )

I've seen loads of colour variations....light green, dark green, deep red, orangey red. Even seen a couple of blue ones that looked original.

Yes I had it run with a mamod double wick burner.
Ran very well and made a nice noise.

I couln't use the original then, as it had a small leak in the soldering.
All fixed by now of course!

It's great you have the original burner - they are so often lost. Small word of caution: don't fill it all the way, as they often flare up very badly.

That is a great restoration Mirko, maybe it started its life green and was painted red later on. I only have the green based SELs', it would have been too costly to collect all the red based ones as well.

Great restoration Mirko.  Fantastic job.

Out of interest, how big is the displacement oiler?
