I'm just getting into something to tinker with as I near retirement and for those cloud in the sky days that the Harley stays locked in the garage. Was thinking about this a couple of years ago and visiting your excellent exhibition at the Lincolnshire Heritage Museum has rekindled this.
I’m seriously thinking of ordering the Mercer type 2 traction engine and some accessories for my 60th birthday at the end of the month (present from the wife).
I have seen it on the web pages of Forest Classics and Geoff Winwood of Bridgnorth
Has anybody any feedback on these two or even anywhere else that could be recommended.
Yours in Anticipation

Hello Urrell, and welcome to the forum!

I'm a relative newbie here myself, and don't feel really qualified to give advice, but I bought a Mercer Type 2 back in January from Geoff Winwood. I had compared him and Forest Classics, and he ended up being a bit cheaper, with a free gear cover thrown in as well. He also seemed to be in much closer contact with David Mercer. And his communication throughout the ordering/machining/shipping process was great.

The kit was supremely well machined, and went together easily. The painting took ages, but the build was quite quick. It's pretty idiot-proof. The instructions were a bit of a surprise though. For some reason I was expecting Lego-style instructions, where the build is broken down into 40 or 50 steps, each one adding a few bits onto the assembly. But no, the instructions were just 3 hand-drawn exploded diagrams. But beautifully-drawn (a work of art, actually) and once you familiarise yourself with all the bits, the rest is a snap. The hardest part for me was swallowing the 80 pound shipping charges to Singapore. But if I remember correctly, it arrived in 3 days.

The engine is a beauty, and I have no regrets at all.
