Seeing all these engines tackle impressive loads, i was wondering how much horsepower has been produced with all of the engines displayed over the weekend. Be fun to guess how much fuel/water was consumed too. _________________ My Website:

Now theres a thought. Meths sales just went up around the world, and the Temp just got about 2 degrees hotter
Seriously though, it had to be a lot of meths. My steaming was a fraction of others and I still used a bit _________________ Cheers

I think you could at least power an average household with the power produced by all the engines this weekend. _________________ Paul |

Depending on the size of the engine I'd say something between 10 and 50 watts. Or in average about 0.03 HP. But I could be wrong of course. _________________ Paul |

i would say if you had 10 to 100 wilesco rollers & tractors would pull a person and of coures they would have to be all old once (the build is better)
and 100 to about 200 mamods and they would have to be add least one te1ac or sr1ac at the front plus if that does not work you could always have a old te1 and a skate board on a hill _________________ jack

I didn't use any meths during this event.
Everything I ran was butane or propane powered this year.
I had hoped to run some meths powered engines too ober the weekend, but the real world got in my way and stopped that from happening. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

I would think the figure of .03 hp is off by a factor of nearly 10. They are probably closer to .003 hp, for the smaller engines, at least.
If you consider that many of the small ones will produce barely enough power to light a dc bulb of 2.5v and .3 amps,
you can see that it will take quite a large engine (in toy terms!) to produce even 10 watts, much less 50. _________________ Filled with a vacuum...

Agreed, the Jensen 50 (5 in boiler, 1 in bore) Jensen Claims it to have 1/10 of a horsepower under full steam, and that might be omptimistic. Saying that, my Jensen 20 (3 in boiler, 3/4 in bore) is probably around 1/40-1/25 of a horsepower if that. Regarding fuel/water consumed, the 3 inch boiler with no tubes takes a lot of water, a full glass to get to 3/4 sight glass level, guessing around 12 oz. _________________

I agree I could be a bit optimistic but I don't think I'm as far off as a factor 10.
You are absolutely right when you say some engines can hardly light a light bulb, but then you're forgetting about the losses in the generator and the drive belt which are quite huge.
When you buy a 150hp car, it's power is also measured at the engine, not at the wheels. _________________ Paul |

Maybe you're not. It's all opinion here when it comes to things like this. I think most people would rather believe their
engines are more powerful than they actually are. It seems to be our nature.
If someone would really like to know the figures for particular engines, they could use a simple apparatus
called a Prony Brake. It will bring dreaded disappointments to light. _________________ Filled with a vacuum...
