|
|
During our recent USA trip, after meeting up with forum members Owen (Igy569) and Gil (Redryder) and having a fix of steam I didn't think it could get any better.
However as we were heading up to Cape Cod, Gil kindly managed to arrange for us to call in on the Rhode Island Museum of Wireless and Steam, the curator is a wonderful man called Robert Merriam, he is an elderly gentleman who was very knowledgeable on all things Steam and Wireless, I spent 3 hours there and really did not want to leave the place, thoroughly recommended! and heart felt thanks to Gil for arranging this out of season visit.
Nice Big Steam Outfit....not sure of make though?
Stepped inside the Mayes Building and wow..
Same building..but lots to see
Models and full size engines together as well as cabinets full of original linen drawings...truly fascinating
The Museums workshop building as well as the boiler that provides the steam supply for their various engines
Mr Merriam rings the bell in the church, one of several buildings on site he has saved being lost forever |

Me & Robert Merriam are now in the engine shed, theres a lot of big engines in here!
Sorry forgotten what this one was! but it was a locally made engine I can remember that.
This was liberated from a factory basement, the rescuers were chest high in dirty water.
Outside of the lovely old Church that was relocated to here
Some seriously large flywheels..
A small section of the wireless and radio display
Despite our best efforts we could not tune into BBC Radio Suffolk.. |

For the best time there if anyone is interested, try to attend the annual fall steam up. It is always the first Saturday in October. The big vertical boiler is stoked all day long by a crew of volunteers that help it consume a few cords of wood. They run nearly all of the big engines inside and have a steam manifold and an air manifild on tables outdoors so people like me can bring some engines to run and display. A great time is always had by all. BigAl has also been spotted there a couple times.
