Went on a Titanic themed cruise on the SS Sheildhall the last bank holiday in May. She is believed to be the largest working steam ship in Northern Europe. The cruise was down the Solent to the Isle of Wight and back. You were allowed in the engine room so it was nice and warm down there, she is oil fired so it was relativity clean down there. Luckily the Band did not gather on deck to start playing. Here are a few pictures.

Lovely old vessel, and neat as a pin! Looks like it might qualify as the smaller class of coasting trader, or what might at some times and places have been called a "tramp" steamer. But obviously this one is no tramp, but a real Lady in every respect.

Thanks for the pictures

Her former life.

SS Shieldhall is a preserved steamship that operates from Southampton. She spent her working life as one of the "Clyde sludge boats", making regular trips from Shieldhall in Glasgow, Scotland, down the River Clyde and Firth of Clyde past the Isle of Arran, to dump treated sewage sludge at sea. These steamships had a tradition, dating back to the First World War, of taking organised parties of passengers on their trips during the summer.

It was built in 1955 to replace a similar vessel whose purpose was to carry the treated sewage out of Glasgow and dump it off the Isle of Arran. It has a passenger lounge as they used to give the OAP's. a day trip at the same time.

OAPs were just one of the party categories that they (Glasgow Corporation) carried. My late mother had a trip on-board through the Townswomen's Guild, and my late father & I took a re-enactment 'sludge trip' when she came back to the Clyde in 2005 for her 50th birthday.

It is good to see/hear that they overcame the major hull repairs & has recently benefited from a Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
