nicks post on how he got tired of counting the laps for his bowman loco got me thinking. before I did model steam, I did quite a bit with electronics. so that got me thinking, I had a DC impulse counter from a previous project, and I decided to rig it up to a relay and a photo diode and have that on one side of the track and a light on the other. I have it working theoretically, and now I'll go test it!

Would it be easier to have the light fixed on the side of the track oposite the sensor, so that the train blocks it every time it passes?

I tried that, and with some additional circuitry it would work, but the way the counter works, this is the simplest way of doing it.

that was the only option at the time, but the photocell had to have a really bright light to activate it. I would add a smaller one, and have a smaller light that would not require a car. keep in mind that this is HO scale as well.
