“1963 Flat Canopy TE1” – at long lastWho says you never get any bargains at steam shows…I simply cannot believe my luck today.
Where do I start!
Well after braving artic winds and freezing temperatures at the Tilford Toy Steam show today along with countless other hardened steam fans such as MTA, MF, Les and his excellent mates from Bournemouth, by 2 o’clock I had had enough.
I had actually packed up for the day and was on my way out, when I stopped to say goodbye to Les. I then got caught up in a conversation with him regarding Kusuchi (Richard) from this forum and how I had originally met him through Ebay - and how we had both bid on the same Nut & Bolt TE1 on Canadian Ebay etc.
During this conversation there was a bloke looking at Les’s excellent steam collection, and suddenly he just piped up. Hey there is an old bloke in a shed up the top with one of those – but his one has got a funny flat top and funny back wheels, and I think he wants to sell it.
OFF I went through the snowy blizzard with this unknown harbinger of hope, up to a small shed which I had not even seen when I had looked around the show earlier..
In through the door I walked and there sitting on the table in FULL STEAM was this little Mamod time capsule…. steaming its little heart out.
As it turned out this bloke had been given it for free by a friend from work last week who had had it sitting in his attic for years.
He was exhibiting with his grandkids, he thought it was not a “Normal Mamod” but just wanted something to steam for the kids. So after lengthy negotiations I ended up selling my Bowman M140 to the unknown eavesdropper and giving the old bloke £50 cash + an old Mamod SR1, I happened to have with me worth about £25 for his grand kids to steam.
What a bargain £75 all in, for this lovely “Flat Canopy TE1”, I have just wiped it down out of the box for these pics, the canopy is perfect and it looks like it will clean up nicely!
Les - sorry I shot off but now you can see why!!!
I will always remember buying this engine - standing in the doorway of a small shed with SNOW billowing in all around me.

Ahh, so that is what I was observing with my Mersey tucked under my arm I wondered why the woman said something about your SR1...
An absolute stunner you have bought yourself there Steve, just wish I had gotten in there first
Then again, having said that Steve if it were not for you being next to Colin Laker I would not have noticed his Mersey for sale
Now, are you going to run it?

Absolutely perfect, Steve. Congratulations
Can't wait to see the pics after the (relatively little) clean up it needs. I have plenty of sunglasses but you may want to warn the UK members to get their's now
Funny how things work out, from the 1964 Nut & Bolt TE1 in Canada, to me in the USVI, to the forum in UK , to Tilford in UK, to stopping to talk to Les about me in the USVI, (nothing too rude I hope), and look what you came home with?
A picture perfect Flat Canopy, 1963 Nut and Bolt TE1
Must be all that clean living
(BTW We'll eventually get that fixed )

Sorry John I seem to have been obsessed with only taking pictures of all the Bowman 101's on show, to help with my E101 restoration.
I clean forgot to take any normal shots, as it was a total whiteout outside the hall I was in most of the afternoon (see MTA's thread)
Sorry John I know how you guys like to see those shots...Next time mate OK.

Richard what can I say - our destines seem to collide a lot lately! (Or it’s just a small world )
Maybe we should do the lottery together mate…. some cosmic force may play a hand if we are lucky

I had that problem as well. I thought I was reasonably intelligent too.
I'm not sure I don't like it better than the later chimney version

I have just come across this thread, approx 2.30 in the morning, and now I can see why you shot off so quick.
It was nice meeting you and being the first? to see your newly restored Bowman before you parted with it.
What was you saying about running out of shelf space, the TE.1 will take up more.
I know you prefer mobiles, and that is a nice one, but I would have kept the Bowman.

Sorry about letting the Bowman go Les, but needs must.
These flat canopy TE's are like hens teethe mate - especially ones in such good condition.
I promise you though Les I will NEVER ever sell my Bowman E101 - if you liked what I did to that M140 just wait till you see my finished E101.
Anyway you will be pleased to know the mysterious stranger who bought the M140 had it fired up and steaming as I was negotiating for the TE, when I finally left the shed it was still purring away like a kitten, so it went to a good home I think.

It's ok as I know the mysterious buyer (David) and will have the pleasure of seeing it run on many occasions, and as you say, it was running a treat as his son (little David) could not wait to fire it up!!!
