"Fluffies" pics for RogWell, before getting stoned last night, I had the job of looking after about 100 longwools. I filled up 110 buckets of water last night
After everyone had gone it gave me chance to photograph all the sheep properly.
Anyways
Here are the pics

Fluffies on ParadeJames,
Those were great pictures, thanks for taking them and sharing them...NOW I really know what a longwool looks like...sort of a regular sheep but with dreadlocks!!!
cheers,
Rog

Aye, they are the biggest of all longwool breeds, an endangered species and they are the most dopey and placid sheep around.
They were shipped across to Australia and New Zealand to breed with their native breeds, to make their fleeces grow bigger and increase wool production. Thus there are only 2 pure English Lincoln rams left in the world.
They are the nicest sheep around, one woman trained hers to give her his hoof!

James, again, splendid pictures. Can you tell me what they are specifically judging for?? Why does the one that man has with all the ribbons win?
|
James
|
He won because it is simply the best sheep there.
They judged them on different things. One judge might place a sheep first and another might place it last.
They judge on:
Size- lincolns are big sheep, so the bigger the better
Colour of ears- Dark ears are best
Length and straightness of the back- a LL should look like a rectangle, perfectly straight
Fleece- good thick fleece, with wide staples of wool and a nice yellowy "yoke" to it. Needs to be heavy and go down to the hooves.
Knackers (tups)- well, what use is a tup with one knacker?
Teeth- Good set of teeth are needed aswell
Head- Must have a big head
Things like that

He won every single cup, every single class and all the prizes. He deserves it though, he is a top chap!

Hi James -- Great pics. Is the wool over the eyes a different clip style (or no clipping I should say) or is it a different fleece growth?? They are great looking sheep. I don't think Australia ever had native sheep but are you saying that the lincolns were bred into the merinos??
Cheers G-J
|
James
|
Hi GJ
The ones in "full wool" are the ones with it over the eyes and that. The ones with short wool were clipped around march time. They have to be sheared for their first year of showing to show the body, and after that you show the wool.
The one with all the prizes has 2 years of growth on its wool
No idea, the lincolns were took over to breed with the Aussie sheep to make their wool production bigger. So all the ausie sheep with longer wool have lincoln blood in them somewhere.
They are what made Lincolnshire great. Brought in loads of money, the biggest wool producing county in the world nearly at one point. People even used to steal and smuggle fleeces out of Lincolnshire! The money helped build all the nice churches and cathedrals and such that we have today

It's a good job the shows are in the summer months, wouldn't fancy steeping in one during winter

LMAO!!
Griff, we had thunder, lightning, the works last night. The other day we had 30m of rain in 10 mins. 108mm in 3 days!
I don't know what I would do without me sheep. I'm moving more into sheep breeding and out of steam now. I say out of steam. I mean full size steam and that. No loss of interent in the toy side of things. I don't have the time nor the money for both. I will be spending around £450 at Heckingtonsale on sheep, then about £150 at Pork Pie sale (melton mobray). Then I'll run them with tup 14, Yaddlethorpe Eric, and have hopefully 3 or 4 ewes/gimmers in lamb. Show me own bred lambs then

Now we know where the saying – " Pulling the wool over one's eyes" comes from
Great stuff, lovely animals, especially the champ & as soon as your foundation stock starts producing Jimbo, you should be up there on the podium. Thanks for pics. Lovely to have an insider view & report.
