"Rosa" the no longer troublesome SL1
There we go, finally working perfectly!!! it runs for what seems an eternity and does many circuits around my track
It can only get better with the oil in the lubricator I did a short video, light was fading so I apologise for the poor quality
I'm a happy bunny though I'll add a couple of stills a little later

Oh it had problems MTA!
Regulator was leaky as crap! Steam dome was turning in the boiler. The steam pipe was loose in the boiler. No sight glass. Crappy gas burner . List is endless

Thats great MM! Glad you've finally got it sorted. It must seem all the more satisfying since you've had to fix so many things... but it certainly goes like the clappers now!

You name it, it has gone wrong with it the relief and joy once it was working was unmeasurable!
So happy, at one point I considered selling but i'm so glad I stuck at it!
It's a lesson to anyone! PERSIST!

Great stuff MM. Runs great. Can't beleive it's been resurected so well.
Restoration awards (note the "S" for other jobs) goes to MM
Well done mate.
Just out of interest, work out the scale speed of that thing. Or I should say real speed. My guess, 150kph?
|
tmuir
|
Wow!
That thing moves.
Guessing its' doing a bit above it's scale speed.
|
Mamodman123

Yes I was suprised at how fast it went! That was only a little bit of throttle, imagine how fast it would be going on full . How would I work that out Wallace?

To work out the speed measure the size of your track in meters.
Mark a start position.
Once the train is up to speed time it to do one lap of your track.
Then convert that to Km per hour by using this formula.
3600 divided by time took to do one lap in seconds.
Times above answer by size of your track then dived by 1000
This will give you actual speed of your train. in km per hour
I'm not sure of the scale of Mamod locos.
If it is 16mm thats 1:19
Times your actual speed by the scale of the Loco to give scale speed.
Let us know when you work it out

Exactly what tmuir said
I was going to say how to do it, but I had no idea on scale size, and or how big real railway stuff is
|
Mamodman123

I think the mamod locos were built on a guage 1 scale but used 0 guage wheels

Wallace

| Mamodman123 wrote: | | I think the mamod locos were built on a guage 1 scale but used 0 guage wheels |
Ahh, ok.
Well what I'd do is measure width between rails on your track, then measure width between rails on a real track. Just watch out for trains
That should help somewhat, or just use tmuirs given figures would be easiest

Think i got it wrong, it was built to naroow gauge style
|
tmuir
|
Don't use track size to work out scale as the same size track can be used for standard or narrow guage trains by having the trains built to different scale.
They would certainly by no bigger than 1:19 as thats the scale of my Roundhouse loco and its about 30cm long. I would guess Mamod would actually be around 1:24, but I could be wrong.

You can run it in a garage, or on a patio like I do
You could even build a layout on a wooden board and run it on your lawn. The possibilities are endless

Is that the size of your back yard MM?,it looks about the same size as mine,im waiting to win the lotto and move into a house with a nice big garden and do what mark founds did (think thats his second name)who did that garden railway series a while ago on discovery i was glued to it,didnt miss em,great stuff, your loco looks very good too .

Thanks Col, it's only a little concrete patch at the back of my garage, we have a lawn and the rest of the garden too! with a shed which is filled with a load of useless rubbish
Garden railways are nice! but ideally, you need it 100% flat, and using a Mamod loco isn't a great idea it doesn't like hills as I discovered

Couldn't fit anything other than a car in our garage when cleared out . It's a long garage but not that wide . Then If it does get cleared out, I might be able to run my loco inside there with no wind
In the video the throttle is just barely open, still quite tricky to get it right as one small slip and it shoots off like a bullet and you have to run after it before it reaches the corners

Being terraced,my yard is the width of the house and just over our cars length in depth,a concrete square,i knocked the back wall down and made double gates becouse the parking is bad round the streets,so once i have the car in there s no room for running anything i even toyed with the idea of shelves round the walls to run something on,but never got round to it(again)

You would have to keep the car on the road somewhere while you lay the track and have a go with a loco.
Worth getting, but not if you haven't got anywhere to run it thankfully I just about have enough space which is flat enough

yes it does seem inpractical MM,i think this was the begginning of my idea to do a layout in the attic with hornby some time ago, never know i might get round to it??
