"Thing" has arrived! James Chantry's Mamod SE4 - VWell, yep. That's it. That's me thing! The thing I were selling a load of engines to buy.
I've been talking with the seller for months, and through one thing and another I've only been able to finance buying it recently, and that was only down to selling some of me own blood.
I told mum to wake me up at 8 this morn, to catch the post, before she went to work. She did, and, within 5 mins I were fast asleep again. At 9:04 I were woken up by me dog barking 8 to the bar. I were just about to go back to sleep when I thought "Crap!! Postman!"
I jumped out of bed, signed for it, and brought it in. Opened it slowly, and there it were. Wrapped all in white bubblewrap.
I didn't feel the magic for a start. Why? Well either because I'd been waiting so long, or because I'd just been woken up by the bloody dog on the first day of the school hlidays!
Wiping the crust away from me eyes (wonderful image), I were like "Bloody hell!"
Take a look here guys. For so long I've wanted an SE4. For about 3 times I've been sooooo close only to have it snatched away at last minute. But none of that matters now!
Good things come to those who wait, and I'm not sure that everybody will be happy with me getting one of these
The engine has been repainted by our friend Steam4Fun, and I already have all the paint and a repro decal lined up for it. Will be done after GJ's weekend visit.
Now, for the pics!

Aye Rog I will! If it were original then nope, but because it's restored I can fire it over and over again without feeling like I'm buggering it up!

Phew at last... He tried to talk me into selling him mine, but I set a price he could refuse.
Nice that's it's already seen the paint brush, gives you license to spruce it up to your liking. Mine looks really tatty in comparison but it's original and I'm a bit wary of doing "too much" to it.
Congratulations and well done for being so patient. All good things come to those who wait.

I am so happy that you finally got it, the things you sold to get it will not be missed now that this is on your shelf.

James, in it's correct color scheme with all correct parts and decal, I expect that SE4 would fetch $1,000 USD (500 GBP). Funny thing is though, it would probably be a forum member who would buy it and you could save eBay fees selling direct.
BUT, don't you dare sell it or even think of selling it

That's just Jimbo for you John.
I can imagine this conversation.
Friend:- "James, my grandad gave me this old tobacco tin from the first world war."
"It saved his life by diverting a bullet as he went over the top. He carried it all his life and he even showed it to Winston Churchill later in life."
"He was decorated in his 90th year by the queen who also was shown the tin and autographed a piece of paper on the inside.
"It is the only one of it's kind left in the world and is treasured by my family."
James:- "All very well lad, but what would it make on ebay??"
Yep I can just hear it.

Bet there still a few in attics Jimbo, the one Steamman got last year was one such, the seller of that one had to ask Moose what the interest in his mamod was about , and Flywheels SC2 came up as a freeby a few weeks ago
Would bet there are likely to be at least another 10 or so in UK attics, bet a few get chucked out as well
Remember that folk given them as childhood presents in their early teens pre war will still be in their 60s or 70s now so such attic finds will continue slowly for at least another 20-30 years
Still unlikely to affect their overall rarity or value as the number of collectors are increasing faster than SE4s are emerging

James

Cheers!
There's a rally type thing on at the museum, May bank holiday weekend. I'll photocopy the exhibitor form and post it to anyone who is interested!

I know these pre-war engines have been broken up or are MIA
Se4 is gone (bloke who went to Germany chucked them out)
SE3 is gone ( i have the boiler and firebox)
SE1 (I have the engine frame)

You get to find a lot of whats out there when you sell spares. The leading question is
"What do you want it for as I like to make sure it is correct for the model that you have?"

Ooooooo…………..what a lovely ‘thing’ Congratulations on a superb purchase, James & for keeping the secret!!!! Well worth all the sacrifice & am hugely envious!
If it were mine, it would sit on beside table, so I could admire it every morning & evening
Think engine support, at least, would look better in original livery.

Its not up to me to tell people, not everybody likes to advertise their collections.
I once met a very well known collector of Triang model railways, most people know him but nobody knows where he lives. I sold him an unusual coloured loco and could not post it to him because he would not give me his address. I met him at what he called halfway between our two houses. He paid me hansomly for my travel expenses.
I just know they are out there and at least three people have two or more.
