"Thing" has arrived! James Chantry's Mamod SE4 - V

Well, yep. That's it. That's me thing! The thing I were selling a load of engines to buy.

I've been talking with the seller for months, and through one thing and another I've only been able to finance buying it recently, and that was only down to selling some of me own blood.

I told mum to wake me up at 8 this morn, to catch the post, before she went to work. She did, and, within 5 mins I were fast asleep again. At 9:04 I were woken up by me dog barking 8 to the bar. I were just about to go back to sleep when I thought "Crap!! Postman!"

I jumped out of bed, signed for it, and brought it in. Opened it slowly, and there it were. Wrapped all in white bubblewrap.

I didn't feel the magic for a start. Why? Well either because I'd been waiting so long, or because I'd just been woken up by the bloody dog on the first day of the school hlidays!

Wiping the crust away from me eyes (wonderful image), I were like "Bloody hell!"

Take a look here guys. For so long I've wanted an SE4. For about 3 times I've been sooooo close only to have it snatched away at last minute. But none of that matters now!

Good things come to those who wait, and I'm not sure that everybody will be happy with me getting one of these

The engine has been repainted by our friend Steam4Fun, and I already have all the paint and a repro decal lined up for it. Will be done after GJ's weekend visit.

Now, for the pics!

With burner from MamodFan

Thumbs up!
James

Thanks Les!! I'm going to do it up exactly as MM did his, and I'm going to use it loads
steamyjim

Looks great James!!!

Please dont polish the boiler
James

Thanks Sandy!! It ain't really sunk in yet!! I'll like it more when it has a nice new decal on it I think
tmuir

Congrats on getting the engine on the top of your want list.
James

Cheers Tony!
Mamodman123

At times you thought you'd never get there but you did in the end

It's a brilliant engine mate! I'm real happy for you

MM
James

Cheers lad! I'm off to try and bake the firebox, at least if it works out, I've saved paint, if it don't, no love lost!
flywheel61

Congratulations, James, it's a about time, it's very hard to keep a secret for so long,     . I mean your purchase of this engine has become almost mythical, like the holy grail,     .

Maybe, one day we can have three in an row all steaming together at ST1A, sigh,

Cheers

Chris
James

Hopefully!! And MC can take his, 4. Who else has one?
tmuir

Well now you got your 'dream' engine can I get my Scorpion loco?

Ooo sorry mate
heavyhaulage

Good news James. The Holy Grail at last eh. !!   Party
IndianaRog

James...as I like to say: "A Thing of Beauty"...real glad for you and you better steam the heck out of it...no shelf queens allowed!
Steve_S

Well done James, that's great!
James

Thanks guys!

Aye Rog I will! If it were original then nope, but because it's restored I can fire it over and over again without feeling like I'm buggering it up!

How much do you think this would fetch on ebay???
James

Cheers Steve! No doubt you'll want a play will yer ?
Steve_S

James wrote:

Oh yes! No doubt!
James

I'll probably have it almost constantly in steam at STIA! Will be a good attraction to the forum table!
mc_mc

Phew at last...  He tried to talk me into selling him mine,  but I set a price he could refuse.

Nice that's it's already seen the paint brush,  gives you license to spruce it up to your liking.   Mine looks really tatty in comparison but it's original and I'm a bit wary of doing "too much" to it.

Congratulations and well done for being so patient.   All good things come to those who wait.
James

Thanks MC!

I'm polishing it now, watch this space!!
Nick

If you're using brasso, we'll be waiting awhile.

Don't dent the boiler with those girthy elbows.
James

Balls to it, I'll polish it when I take it to bits!
Mamodman123

Dont you dare
I am so happy that you finally got it, the things you sold to get it will not be missed now that this is on your shelf.
IndianaRog

James, in it's correct color scheme with all correct parts and decal, I expect that SE4 would fetch $1,000 USD (500 GBP).  Funny thing is though, it would probably be a forum member who would buy it and you could save eBay fees selling direct.

BUT, don't you dare sell it or even think of selling it

That's just Jimbo for you John.

I can imagine this conversation.

Friend:- "James, my grandad gave me this old tobacco tin from the first world war."

"It saved his life by diverting a bullet as he went over the top. He carried it all his life and he even showed it to Winston Churchill later in life."

"He was decorated in his 90th year by the queen who also was shown the tin and autographed a piece of paper on the inside.

"It is the only one of it's kind left in the world and is treasured by my family."

James:-  "All very well lad, but what would it make on ebay??"

Yep I can just hear it.
Wilescoman_123

Nice se4 well done !
James

Yeah I'll never sell it, just wanting to know how much over the odds I paid for it!

James

Thanks Moosey!! Got some nitromors now!!

Les, I could have gambled on ebay and won for less, or bought for a bit more privately. I weren't prepared to gamble on ANOTHER SE4

You're on the ladder now
James

Aye lad! I don't know any collector with more than one! Surely they must be close to all being in collector's hands?
Lewis

Looks if it was worth the though wait mate shes a gooden

Ill be coming to lincoln i hope lad
Stilldrillin

Well done lad!

Bet there still a few in attics Jimbo, the one Steamman got last year was one such, the seller of that one had to ask Moose what the interest in his mamod was about , and Flywheels SC2 came up as a freeby a few weeks ago

Would bet there are likely to be at least another 10 or so in UK attics, bet a few get chucked out as well

Remember that folk given them as childhood presents in their early teens pre war will still be in their  60s or 70s now so such attic finds will continue slowly for at least another 20-30 years

Still unlikely to affect their overall rarity or value as the number of collectors are increasing faster than SE4s are emerging
James

Cheers!

There's a rally type thing on at the museum, May bank holiday weekend. I'll photocopy the exhibitor form and post it to anyone who is interested!

Great engine by the way

Feel free to paint as it has been done before but my vote goes for no polish.

I know these pre-war engines have been broken up or are MIA

Se4 is gone (bloke who went to Germany chucked them out)
SE3 is gone ( i have the boiler and firebox)
SE1 (I have the engine frame)

Saying that I know three collectors with more than one SE4, they are just greedy.

Lovely engines the SE4 and yours is a very nice one,

not my fave engine though as that is the PW SE3
James

Oh aye! Who are these here collectors?
MamodFan

James wrote:

Some of them were at STIA , did not have them with them though as they had different engines on display. One even changed hands on the day out in the car park. I missed out on it

I assume the ones to who MF has sold 2 SE4 burners to
MamodFan

You get to find a lot of whats out there when you sell spares. The leading question is
"What do you want it for as I like to make sure it is correct for the model that you have?"

I can hear James getting out the lathe to make a few spares at this moment

trouble is they buy spares because they want to keep their engines
steamgranny

Ooooooo…………..what a lovely ‘thing’  Congratulations on a superb purchase, James & for keeping the secret!!!! Well worth all the sacrifice & am hugely envious!
If it were mine, it would sit on beside table, so I could admire it every morning & evening
Think engine support, at least, would look better in original livery.
James

Thanks SG!

Come on then Ian, spill the beans on who it is!

SG, the frames will be the 1st to be repainted
bessytractor

ah ha! He finally gets one

great buy there mate, and I'm so glad your actually going to run it often.  I hate seeing old engines that are perfectly usable left to gently glisten in display cabinets!
James

Oooh you bet she'll run often. I just oiled her up and it turns over sooooo smoothly

Its not up to me to tell people, not everybody likes to advertise their collections.

I once met a very well known collector of Triang model railways, most people know him but nobody knows where he lives. I sold him an unusual coloured loco and could not post it to him because he would not give me his address. I met him at what he called halfway between our two houses. He paid me hansomly for my travel expenses.

I just know they are out there and at least three people have two or more.

I gathered that   which is fair enough!

Then again that is what alarms are for, and everything else when you have a lot of expensive equipment!

Each to their own, he did display at exhibitions though.

Griffin

Well done James, I am glad you finally managed to acquire one of these lovely engines.
James

Thanks Griff!! Looks great Nick!!
Wallace

Well done James. I know you always wanted one, and finally you got it

Very nice looking engine mate. Top job, and look forward to seeing it in steam
Manxman

This a another good piece of news I'm catching up with this morning. Good on you James. It seems in our forum that an SE4 has become a bit a special item and I'm glad you've joined the ranks of those who own one. Enjoy it.
James

Thanks Wallace and Manx! I've stripped the engine frame and base paint off, firebox to do, filling the pitting, and then respray
steamyjim

Pics?
James

In a bit, off out!
steamyjim

AAAH OK
James

HEre she is pre repaint with decal (not stuck on)

steamyjim

Looks good James!

Your leaving the base then?
Sandman

Jimbo, have you stripped the base yet??

When you do, if that pitting still remains, give it a smear of P38 filler and sand it smooth before priming.

I've a feeling it's just the old paint though.
James

James

Should I put the restoration in this thread? Or the other one I did about the resto?
steamyjim

I'd put it in the restoration thread.

But put a before and after pic in here
