1/2 Dozen SE3'sI though I'd better put up pics of all my six SE3's before at least two get the chop. No two engines are the same but I have to reduce numbers. You may also notice that, unlike may of my previous pics at least two of these engines have been steamed on a regualr bais. Like MM I have to say theyare my favourite engine.
Not all of these engines have been steamed and from left to right, rear, 1957-8Camden works, post Camden Works but still with the moulded steel piston rod ends, reasonably early 60's engine with a white plastic knob on the burner, SE3 G & G, front, SE3 with hammertone (hammerite) engine frame and SE31976 79 tablet burner
SE3 Camden Works, the earliesat SE3 from 1957-8, has a much larger burner (with a wooden handle) than the normal one plus the cylinder blocks are one piece - not the cylinder soldered to the block . Mine also has a steel pulley rather than the normal brass one. The engine frame is also screwd to the base not riveted with eyelets.
Early large SE3 burner on top and the normal one underneath. I can understand why they changed to the smaller burner as the flame height on the bigger one curls right around the boiler and reaches the top of the chimney,
I think this engine was built just after the move from Camden works to Thorns Road Works around 1962--3 as it still has the moulded round steel ends on the piston rods.
The SE3 G & G was built especially for Griffen & George from around 1967 and doesn't have a regulator on the top of the boiler. Mine also has the steel pulley rather than the brass one and they were also apparently supplied with quite thick drive bands
Like many Mamod engines the engine frames on some models were painted with a Hammertone (Hammerite ) finish, apart from that there is little difference for other SE3 engines, this one is from post 1972 as it has the lever whistle.
There is nothing remarkable about this SE3 but it is the engine that finally had the original end cap replaced with a Welch plug (antifreeze plug). It is almost identical to the original one but the edges are a little rounder, and in this case the hole for the overflow plug was drilled a little too low but there is still enough water for a full burner of metho
One of the last SE3's produced between 1976 and 1978 and has a tablet burner. There were SE3's with sight glasses made between 1978-9 but I've never seen one.
Cheers

What a great set of engines and history. I can see why you like them and I guess also see why you may want to clear a few out. However, if it was me, I just box the 'extra' engines up and store them. I'd struggle to part with any of those and I'd only want to buy another one the same after each one had gone.

The problem is that there are already other boxes for other engines & accessories in those SE3 boxes, . I already have my FE1 put away it its box. I don't seem to be having much luck selling my unfired tablet burner SE3, I guess I might just have to get used to seeing them around as I really don't want to be paying ebay all the time and not selling any engines, . Maybe I should just broach the subject of another display case, .

Great collection of SE3's Chris! they are all in such good condition
I'll show you an SE3 with a sight glass. I've had two in my time. A normal Mamod SE3 and this Griffin and George version.
I had to replace the sight glass as it was missing when I bought the engine a couple of years ago . But they're out there. Made from 78-79

A lovely display of SE3's there Chris. I would be tempted to keep the ones you are thinking of selling, as you have a very good cross section there.
If space is at a premium, I can see why you are thinking about selling a couple.
Great to see

so are the sight glass ones particularly rare? I'd like one so I can replace the whistle with a top up valve and keep going on and on and on........

Yes very rare you barely see them come up for sale! They were effectively made for a very short amount of time before they changed over to the SP range

Looks like I might end up with the same number as you MM, magic number 7 , . probably be as much of a battle as over the prewar SE3, .
