1958 SE2I recieved my rather decrepit looking SE2 today and wasted no time in stripping it and cleaning it, which it was in dire need of.
Firstly I took the firebox and boiler off, then the pulley flywheel and crankshaft. I soaked the base in the degreasing tank at work then blasted it with disc brake cleaner a few hours later.
All is now clean and here is where is stands as of now:
How it looked before:
The firebox and band soaking in a VAT of coke:
The Boiler (look still signs of brass!):
Crank,Bolts.Pulley, and part of the cylinder:
Flywheel:
Base and engine frame:
Next on my list is a respray and re assemble Ford Radient Red for the Base and Ford Green for the engine frame work.
Any thoughts and advice welcomed.

Looks good.
Does coke work well on the boiler bands?

Hi,
I'm starting mine soon, though it's not as bad as this one, good luck! Would it be as early as 1958 with rivets, I thought they were still bolts, but I am new to this!

Looking forward to seeing this restored. Have you found a piston/cylinder for it?

I've had a look at Les' 58 SE2 and thats riveted too. so i'm happy to stick with that dating for now.
Ross the coke has worked a treat its loosened the bulk of the corrosion just need to break out the emery paper/wire wool to get down to good metal.

Does anybody rate this for fireboxes?

I can't see any harm in using that. Should do the job well.
I'm not familar with the brand of Hammerite though. Other will be able to help. I'm just wondering if it gives a hammer look finish (called Hammertone here) or not.
But temp wise it will be perfect

cheers Wallace, its a smooth gloss finish as far as i can gather from the retailer. I'll give it a shot nothing to lose as the firebox is now bare metal.
