1960s model boiler "going for a checkup"- UPDATED.

this boiler of mine is going to be pressure tested and looked over by a model engineer this Tuesday. I'm hoping to get it all silver soldered for safety reasons.

good luck !

thankyou.

I'd like to keep steaming this boiler for many years to come.
tmuir

I would of though it was already silver soldered.
But as long as its looked after it should have many more years in it yet.
Les Marsh

Good luck.

Good luck mate - silver soldering on such a big boiler is very important - I assume it's just the fittings that need doing, not the boiler itself?

thanks Odilon. I'm not sure, but I'd like everything to have a thorough going over (except for whistle & engine- I know they work ok )
johnreid

I am sure that what isnt needed will not be done, and what is needed will be done. Best of luck.

yes. apparently, this boiler has a weird configuration tubes set up-if I can take a photo of them, I'll post it.
igy569

I would like to see that myself if you can get the pic...  I am working on plans for a tube style boiler.
Again...  I am just a glutton for punishment.
mc_mc

It's good to have it checked out.   I hope nothing serious is found in the process.

ah- thanks Sj.

engineer didn't need to take it all apart.

This's what needed to be done- today 13 May 2008--

check valve cleaned.

hand pump part dismantled- o-ring worn in pump bit- that replaced. ball put in pump-none was there originally.

man told me just to fire this boiler on special occassions- since its old.

He might just be trying to be a little cautious.

I am sure several of our engines are considered dangerous by others, but as long as you are careful
(check everything over before each run), and you know what you are doing, I think it will probably be
safe for years.

I bet you are a lot happier this morning now that is done and with a miniscule list of jobs to do on it.
Stilldrillin

A nice feeling of relief, as all`s well.

Almost like your car passing it`s MOT......
Graham-Jilly

great job well done mate bet your pleased
johnreid

loco number 1947 'Eureka' at our railway is on its original boiler from 1927 and its still working fiercesomely hard every weekend!  Age doesn't mean the end for a boiler
johnreid

The older the boiler the better the quality of materials used is often the case. I have no problems running my Steamers that are from the 1950s or earlier, but common sense like a good safety valve etc is the rule.
I bet yours is as strong as the day it was built Clinton.

cheers for the positive outlook.   yeah its SV was checked 2 or 3 years ago. I steamed this engine today- the SV releases just after *30psi- *which it's meant to.

1947s boiler is built from 1/4" thick copper plate and is rivetted together!  I honestly could not say when it will wear out.  The actual chassis will probably wear out three times before the boiler
