1963 MAMOD STEAM TRACTOR SPIRIT BURNER HELP...

Hello, I have this mamod spirit burner that came off one of my 1963 steam tractors.....((Wanting to know did mamod use Asbestos in the cotton material inside the burner???)) I know unfortunatly they did with  some of the early wicks from the old wick burners without knowing the dangers back in the early day, but what about the VAP spirit burner's from 1963?? Thanks Everyone

Pretty sure they didn't, but wait until one of our Mamod experts comments

Hope they didn't so I wont end up having to seal and store the burner in a bag as hazard matarial.... LOL JK thanks!

Even if they did you don't need to store it in a bag as "hazardous".

Hi, I cant say for certain, but quite a few have removed the stuff from these and its not asbestos.

I have taken stuff out of a 1957 or 58 SE3 burner and that is like a wadding type stuff that burns readily if ignited. I would think that makes a later one like yours the same, and not asbestos related.

You are right about the earlier wick based burners. Some members have got packets saying asbestos wicks for mamods on them

A reputable Mamod dealer told me they used a lamp wick filling in the vapourising burners.

I know the packing can need replacing after time due to heavy use, as it becomes chared, so this would indicate as Tom says that it is not asbestos.

Also, Mamod mention in the operating instructions of these burners to replace the packing with cotton wool, once they start to loose burning power.

I have replaced a lot of the material inside the meths burners and never yet found any to contain asbestos and replaced all the old material with loft insulation material nicked out of my own   loft..

Cotton wool is the best replacement, cheap and works very well.
