62" Steam Launch - The Voyage Begins. With many thanks to Steve S, the first leg of her journey home begins tomorrow.
Once again Steve is making his annual pilgrimage to Scunthorpe, this time to collect a 62" Steam Launch I recently purchased.
He should be home around 7.30pm and will be posting pictures at about 8.30pm.
Can't thank you enough, Steve, for all your efforts on my behalf.
They really are truly appreciated.

Are you collecting this one at STiA 2010??

Another!!
Cool!
Have you got photos and have you found a more cost effective and quicker way to get this one home?
Maybe it will be cheaper for your next one to just pay the builder to move to the VI for 6 months to build it.

Maybe he just likes spending someone elses money and buying huge model steam launches! It'd be like christmas!

OK, a little late, but here she is:

Mother of pearl that thing is enormous!
Not as graceful as Topaz maybe, but the woodwork.....the marquetry....the engine.....ohmygodohmygodohmygod.
I need a cold shower quick!

Ahhhh, My Pretty......She is quite large indeed...
I swear you and your wife Steve must have moved in with Mr And Mrs Moose--- that table cloth almost matches...
Another good "forum " assist!

What you mean Greg is that Steve and I have the same impeccable taste in interior decorating!
Sorry -
What a boat - Andrew could practically ride in that!
How on god's green earth are you going to get that shipped????

Exactly. We've had that one for years and years... it's practically indestructible.

Many, many thanks Steve.
OMG she's big. Where are you going to put her? Do you have a spare bed.
My initial thoughts were to reduce the scale of the cabin to give her a longer sleeker look. She also needs a new handrail. Look like this could be achieved quite easily.
The hull and the Steam plant are magnificent, however. Like Moose I love the marquetry.
Does the separator tank come with instructions. Never seen one so complicated.
Once again, thanks for all your efforts and the great pics. They are truly appreciated.
I'll call you tomorrow.

With the Haz Mat labels on the right side of the crate.

Its almost big enough for you to sail it home

She is big! But she'll go in a box in the attic. Wal gave me the boiler certificate, instructions for the "Wharfedale" boiler, and instructions for the "Richmond" engine. There aren't many pages so I could scan them and email them to you as pdf files. I'll do that at work on monday, as my scanner at home has given up.
The finish isn't as good as that of Topaz by any means, but she could be made into a stunning vessel with some work, and she'll look fantastic when she's steaming. And, being so big, she'll be fine on the ocean!

There are some good pictures of the engine and boiler on the John Hemmens website at www.steamengines.co.uk

Thanks Steve.
Much appreciated.
I believe she also has an attenuator fitted to control boiler pressure, though I haven't identified it in the pictures yet.
Have downloaded them and will study them in more detail tonight.
Is the stern scuffed up or is that camera flash?
How was Wal? Did he have anything interesting to say?
Thanks again,
|
Steve_S
|
No, the stern isn't scuffed, it was just the flash. Wal was fine, but I was only there for five minutes so we didn't have a long chat this time. He's thinking of getting a canal narrow boat to live on, so I guess that'll curtail his boat building! I did notice another half finished boat in his garage!

The Lady Jane II?
Was this it?
|
Steve_S
|
Yes, I think it was. Nice boat!
|
kusuchi

I know it's progressed a little further now. Wal has kept me updated on the build, but I haven't downloaded the photos.
He tells me he's planning on keeping this one and sailing it alongside the canal narrowboat.
Any idea how he came to be retired at 48?
|

Not sure.... I think he's ex-navy.

A red hull denotes a Hemmens prototype.

Yes, he worked on Royal Navy ships at Rosyth dockyard, where I spent some of my childhood. Albeit somewhat earlier.
He uses Rosyth as his username on another forum. But uses a pseudonym for his first name on his posts.

I sincerely hope I won't burden Steve that long. Still......sounds like a good excuse.
|

Once she's in the attic she's not in anyones way, so don't worry about how long it takes! It would be a good excuse for me to get into STIA early again!
I didn't know that Wal had been at Rosyth. When I lived in Scotland I used to work in Dalgety Bay... just two or three miles from there.

A temporary resting place in my attic. The least exotic place she'll ever be!

Sorry i've been sooo slow to comment on all both of your wonderful launches Richard! Who would have thought that St. Thomas would become a naval superpower?! When do you expect to take hold of the 62 incher?

That is one nice looking launch that all of us would love to own, well done Richard.

Maybe you could call her The Ark.
(She's big enough to carry livestock!)
