65 years since the Dam Buster's raid

65 years ago today, 19 Lancasters took off from RAF Scampton to bomb 3 dams in Germany. 8 planes were lost and 53 crewmen.

The bomb was designed and tested in Lincolnshire

Here's the base, taken from GJ's camper van

And here is the site where the fuel for the planes was pumped from to Scampton

We shall remember them!

Makes me bloody proud to be British!
Rob

aye jim, same here.
Lewis

we shall remember them all the men and aircraft

You sure can't beat the sound of four rolls royce merlins from a Lancaster.

I see the City of Lincoln - now painted up as Phantom of the Ruhr is looking absolutely fantastic after it's extensive refit!

CCairns

And here is the BBC videos on the practice Dam flypast in North Derbyshire (Derwent Dam) - sorry James not Lincolnshire!

(edit) and

Anyone know how to grab these flash videos to save on your computer for future viewing?
James

Aye, BUT the ones where they tested the bomb were in Lincolnshire
CCairns

Wrong, according to Wikipedia, Barnes Wallis actually used a dam in Mid-Wales.
Quote:
The Nant-y-Gro dam - this small dam was constructed in the early stages of the project to supply water to the navvies village at the site; it was most famously used during the Second World War by Sir Barnes Wallis during trials of the explosive charges he intended to use in the 'bouncing' bombs which later targeted the Ruhr dams.

And testing of the bombs took place in Kent.
Quote:
Testing of the bouncing bomb was done at Reculver, Kent.

Sorry!
James

Shouldn't trust Wikipedia over people who know local history
James

Forgot to say, it were when he were testing the concept to see if it worked, with small scale models, in a lake with no dam
Lewis

aye i seen them go over dewent before

very close to me is dewent dams and howden dam

they have a sort of small museum inside of the dams about the dambusters
CCairns

Here's a video of the testing - http://www.1001crash.com/telechvi...ounc_good&lg=2&nonjava=ok

And an even better one on YouTube, noting it states that this is the only live testing of the bomb - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrN0iVJjLgU

Was Kent part of Lincolnshire in WW2!
James

The model was tested at Fillingham Lake

aye lewis been in that museum, they have a mock up of the bouncing bomb, an good day out that is.
CCairns

Here's a very good history on the whole operation, but I can see no mention of Fillingham Lake  - http://www.war-experience.org/his...yaspects/damsraid0543/default.asp

The Building Research Station at Garston, where the model was built is apparently near Watford.

Was Fillingham Lake used for the making of the movie?

And again from Wikipedia.
Quote:
During the Second World War it was involved in the confidential research and development of the bouncing bomb for use against the Möhne Dam in the famous Dambusters Raid of 1943 [5] (The small scale model of the dam used for testing can still be found at the Centre in Garston, Watford, today).
James

Naa, defo when he was designing it! I'd bet me life on it!
Lewis

dewent was used for the training i think

... I bet the families of the German civilians that died 'cause of that catastrophe are not too happy about the anniversary.

There are no real winners in war.
All we can really hope is that all sides learn from it and don't make the same mistakes again..............................

... right you are there, mate. Kind greetz from the other side of the globe!
James

Well I was at Woodhall Spa show today, and the Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire did a bit of a display

Got some good pics and a video!!
Rob

i had a phone call from grandad just before heartbeat, saying that he got to go in the lancaster which is owned by the guys who live on a farm, and taxi it up and down, but it cant fly. he said they all got to go in all the different possitions, taxi up and down in it, have lunch in the naffi, have a ride on the recovery truck, go in the museum. sounded right good fun.
James

Ahh at East Kirkby!

Been there, done that
James

I said to mother, I dunno why but whenever I hear a Lancaster flying over I always feel rate queer! She were like "You're maybe re-incarnated (or whatever it is) from the last war!"

I were like "O aye"

Anyways, it were hard trying to photograph it, but I'm quite pleased with some of these!!

Les

Nice pictures.
johnreid

I love watching the Warbirds fly, last fall in Columbus Ohio, about three hours drive from here, there was a gathering of over 150 P51 Mustangs, I can not describe the sound of so many Merlins in operation at the same time.
