A message I received...I received this message via YouTube, it seems perfectly legitimate:
"Hello, How's it going.
My name is Andy Wilson and I live in Durham, England. As a fellow collector and enthusiast, I am contacting you to introduce you to my new website. It is a 'totally free-to-use' community website that was specifically created for collectors and hobbyists of every kind, and that definitely includes those who specialise in HORNBY, MECCANO-HORNBY-DUBLO, Live-Steam, Mamod miniature traction engines and 'THE FULL SIZE THINGS' as well.
.
You can build your own collection profile; you can write as much or as little about your collections as you like; you can add as many pictures as you like; you can add as many videos as you like; you can use our free classified adverts to buy and sell, trade and swap, and you can communicate with any of our members - via the forum, chat rooms and instant messaging.
.
Right now, the website is brand new. The reason that I have contacted you is because I am trying to attract as broad a range of collections from around the world as possible, and the excellent model railway installations and accessories featured in your videos make them perfect examples to show off on the site.
Thanks for reading my email, and feel free to have a look around ... it's there for everyone to use.
Kind Regards
Andy Wilson
17.10.2007"
I'll be joining up for sure! Anyone else?

Just take caution if any personal information is asked for. I wouldnt even give my Location if it is where a lot of my possessions are listed.

Be careful guys! What "seems" isn't always what is!

I think I'll take a pass. "Clearinghouse" sites historically tend to be problems waiting to happen. Something feels a bit cheesy and I can't put my finger on why.

I'll pass too.
A site that is just about collecting, any collecting is a bit vague for me.
If I want to talk steam toys, get help or parts I think I'll just stick with sites that are dedicated to that as thats where most collectors of steam toys will be found not on a sight that is just about collecting anything.
I'm also a bit wary of this
'100% committed to showcasing your collection to the world'
I don't mind posting the occasional pictures but don't really want the whole world to know what's in my collection, could make it a too tempting target.

I'll pass also, as we've learned trying to split a well established community in half. I've had one very good expirence from YouTube, and that's meeting PTLRcecil.

My thoughts exactly. I'd rather be a little more discriminating myself. I've wandered through the place and several things strike me.
The "FAQ" is totally empty
"Terms" section is vague unto being totally non-informational and refers you to "articles" where nothing exists.
"About us" is all gibberish about the software used to create the site and has zero information about their intended mission or philosophy.
"Privacy" is so thin on information that it resembles water soup.
The basic idea seems to be a "my space/Blogsphere" environment .... something I've studiously avoided as being the online equivalent of playing with one's self in public.
My personal assessment is that you are signing up for something that has far too few controls and even fewer limitations of how your information is used. Down here in the sunny south we call that "buying a pig in a poke".

Cedge, good work on noting all those issues, it's really appreciated.
Only now reading this thread did it click for me. Last week in the paper there was a big warning about Youtube users receiving invites. They didn't go into specifics, however it stated that the invites resulted in unprotected computers being attacked. (I assume with spyware and such?)
Probably best for anyone who signed up, clicking special links to run appropriate removal software, just to be on the safe side.
Thanks again Cedge

Drive by downloads and such?
S'why I stopped using IE years ago...
One reason anyway.
I've never gotten an invite like that. Just friends invites from people wanting to promote their crappy music videos and things. Gets really annoying when they push their stuff on you.
That, and I'm always having to patrol my comments and delete these ruddy hotchickz spams, etc..
Still, I've met a few decent folk through the youtube message system
I have trouble enough keeping up with one board at a time, though.

Try to read the posts and manage the forum and continually try and improve it and then you definitely only have time for one forum.

That's my long term goal but unfortunately work will keep getting in the way for a bit longer yet.

I think a little caution is required. We all know about indentity theft but it's the old-fashioned type you need to think of as well.
The guys running the operation could be A1, but anyone could access the site - see your collection and if cunning enough identify where you live and - - bye bye collection one dark night! Or am an old cynic?
OK before James chimes in - I'll agree to the relatively old bit.

Managing is a joint effort James, your the ideas man and then you give the job to me to do it.
Want to swap?

Just walk around with a clip board and occasionally pretend to tick things on it and every now and then point at someone then something else and you will look like a right proper manager.... or is that w****r.

Certainly not an old cynic mate. Restoring cars and putting them into shows, you wouldn't beleive the extent people went to, to try and steal a car
