A new toyMy new 2KVA variable transformer (variac) arrived today and she is a cracker, i love nice shiny new stuff I found a place in NZ that sell them very cheap this was well under $180 nzd including shipping.

So much fun with these to run the leccy`s nomatter if they are 110 or 220V, and on top of that this variac gives you the power to run several at the time

I have run my Jensen 30 already and she ticked over nice and slow on 60v after a half hour i still had lots of water left on the site glass i reakon it would go for hours

Its amazing right?
Please do take notice that you put the variac on something that you wont mind getting a few marks, as the rubberfeet on mine tends to leave black marks when it has been standing at the same spot for a while

Nice but, I don't like the open terminals at mains voltage!!! Or the aparent lack of an earth connection !!!

Roly, it is a grown up thing to handle these variacs, i give you that but believe me...you`d have to put your fingers into the pencilsharpener or use a pointy piece of metal to get a shock from those terminals when they are tightened down.
There is earth-connections, and i would think the green/yellow wires on Andrews setup goes down to it, it`s a screw into the chassis beside both terminal sets

It is earthed correctly i had an electrition do it for me.......

No it is so quiet i did not think it was going no hum at all from it i'm very happy.

none at all ? thats interesting, very...
i had been looking something like that to drive my valve amp. found a couple but they had bad hum problems...i cant have that.
we have very high voltage here in west oz and its up and down like a w&&$@'s drawers and so we run at anywhere between 230 and 258..... yeah i monitored it for a full day a year or so back...
