A question about banks, cheques, and all that crap

Rate, if I send a cheque off today, and Mr Breezeblock gets it tomorrow, and he cashes it straight away, and it takes like 3 days to clear, when will it be cleared (what with all this eer easter thing)

Ta!
Steamgirl

If he actually manages to pay it into his bank before 5pm tomorrow, the next working day is Tuesday.  So I'd say next Thursday...
But they can surprise you and do it quicker!
James

Eeee so I should have it by next friday or saturday then
Bogstandard

James,
He will only be able to pay it into his account tomorrow, unless he pays a bank fee to clear it straight away, it is usually three to four WORKING days before it is in his account, not when it gets taken out of yours.
If the bank is on it's toes it will snatch it out of your account as soon as it can, then it can get three to four working days interest on it before it is paid into his account.

So if the bank is really greedy, cheque in tomorrow, grab the money out of your account tomorrow, bank holiday over the weekend, first working day next tuesday, thursday or friday next week the money will be paid into his account. So in this case the rip off bank will get up to 7 days interest.

The poor bank has to make its money somehow!!!!

Send it first class, otherwise it won't arrive until Saturday, he then cannot bank it until Tuesday.
James

Aye aye aye I knew it clears in working days, just wondered when the lazy sods at the bank will be working this easter! I'm in a rush you see
Bogstandard

You did it the wrong way around James that is why I gave you that answer.
If you get a cheque off him tomorrow, and it is for a reasonable amount, you can take it into your bank and pay a fee to clear it straight away, you can  have it in your account tomorrow. Otherwise it might be next thursday or friday before it is cleared.

Checks "clear" quickly but banks do not always allow the funds to be made available immediately. If you send a check to someone who has money in the bank, he can cash it and spend the money, however the current balance in his account covers the amount till all of the other banks involved have been satisfied, thus it takes less time if both parties are using the same bank. If one does not have more money in the bank account than a check is for, most often you need to deposit it and wait till the bank is assured that it has the funds, this usually is 3 to 5 days. If for some reason the check isnt a good check, of some sort of tomfoolery has happened they can still go after you for 10 days. So if there is any doubt to the validity of a check wait the full 10 ( business ) days to be sure. If you are confident that the check is good, three days is a safe bet.
A Cashiers or Certified Check clears instantly and that is an option worth checking into if you want to buy something but the seller isnt going to ship till the check clears. It doesnt cost much and some banks will do it for free to some account holders.
