The Denying Dutchman
|
A very happy Dutchman.I had my fingers crossed this week for when and if my new engine would arrive. (Dutch trading sites doesn't offer buyers protection so you can be easily conned.) And then there was the packaging thing. Would it be well packed and not just thrown in a box with a few newspaper as is often seen.
The engine did arrive and it is the most wel packed engine that ever reached my home!
Double boxed and lots of styrofoam pieces, which were cut to fit so that if formed a massive styrofoam wall around the engine. I could have played baseball with this box without damaging the content. Hats off to the seller!
So here it is...
The base is missing one bolt...
... and the steam line has to be soldered to the engine. Minor fixes.
Boiler appears to be in good condition, as are the SV and the whistle.
Most of the original paintwork is still there (also at the bottom) and there is hardly any rust to be found.
Unfortunately the engine is missing it's burner, but I managed to get 10 euro discount on the already fair/cheap price. So that's no big deal. To give you an idea of it's size: the base plate is about the size of a Mamod SE2 and the boiler has about the size of a Wilesco D4/5/6.
According to http://johno.myiglou.com/dollsteam.html it's possibly a 335/2 from around 1927. But maybe Les can be more precise?

Cripes that is a pretty engine

I like that a lot, when I looked at the Doll website the 335/2 is a totally different engine to the one on John Myiglou's website, as of yet I do not know what it is.

It's early. Pre-WWI if not mistaken.

You're right Les, apparently John made a typo.
Here's another one with the same firebox and baseplate. Unfortunately this one I'll never be able to afford.

Can you put a date on that linoleum so that I have an idea how old my engine is?

Actually...Mom-mom's house was pre-WWI so it looks as if MrDuck's accessment might be spot on...

Wish they still made engines with those pretty bases...it does remind me of a kitchen floor of old...like 80 years ago!

That engine is truly a real "Doll"!!!
Nice score!

Splendid engine. The tile pattern is fairly typical of latter part of the 19th century (although there might be fewer colors). I would agree with Mr Duck on the early 1900s or so.

Very nice, Paul.
I love the "boxiness" of the boiler.
Reminds me of KMV's Steam Engine House.

Perhaps it's from this engine he got the idea?

Great to see you finally have it.
It looks a lot nicer with your close ups than it did the other day i saw it and it looked real nice then

Very nice.... the tile is cool looking.
The solid type of styrofoam the seller used is better than peanuts as it stays in place.... so the engine won't shift around.
