nice one john, i can remember seeing those computers at school when i first started. i remember watching one of those not long ago.
i have a great vid from fred dibnahs explorer which features a film called "look stranger" which looks similar. this certain one shows how dr tony marchington organised his first steam rally.

Aye mate!
I'll probably get moved down a set LOL
Set 2 ATM, aiming A*/A at GCSE
Urgh things like Trigonometry, similtaneous equationsn and bollocks like that! Who needs it?! Not me!

i think to myself somedays i wish i were born back in the good old days when you didnt need any or few certifcates to get a job

Aye lad!
They were like "Oh aye you need maths to do engineering"
I'm like "aye! I can count! I can count in several languages, including shepherd, I can use a bloody calculator, why the hell will I have to work out how much something costs just from the quantity they bought! If it's something like fish and chips for example, look at the bloody menu!"
That got me a good going o'er by the teacher LOL

you would have needed many if any qualifications to work on the railways which is what i would have done
aye as Fred said "weve gone backwards"

I heard of counting sheep, but not heard that one before.

We have lad!
I'm bricking me GCSEs, partly cos I've got a £75 bet going with me brother that I will match/beat what he got

Now Jimbo, you couldn't be more wrong about maths and engineering.
Engineering is all maths. As for trigonometry, I used it all the time when I worked on the surface table marking off and checking angles.
If you want to be a real engineer, stick into the maths lad.

James

LOL but I just think it's so bloody boring!!
I'd rather be doing woodwork or rugby

I know, because I felt the same way.
Glad I did do it now though.

What did you get in GCE for Maths if you don't mind me asking Sandy??

| James wrote: | | What did you get in GCE for Maths if you don't mind me asking Sandy?? |
We didn't have GCEs in my day Jimbo.
I had to sit an entrance exam for Kilmarnock college on a years pre- apprenticeship course.
It covered subjects like algebra, geometry and trigonometry as well as english.
It was very stiff as there very few places. It was one of my proudest moments as I was one of only 3 who passed out of 32.
Once we had completed the course, the local engineering firms took their pick of apprentices.
I had my first job a month before I finished the course.

Bloody hell! Well done mate!
I really dunno what to do
I'm torn between Edlingtons in Gainsborough, the last engineering firm in Gainsgorough, dating back to 1875 or something, OR be a boiler maker/scale steam engine maker in Lincoln?
|
Sandman
|
It was a lot easier getting an engineering job in my day mate.
Now, most of the firms are closed.
I saw one of my old workmates the other day. He was sweeping the street.
He was one of the best turners in our factory.
What a waste of skilled men.
|
James
|
Bloody hell, really??
I thought if I worked for Edlingtons, then I'd be working for a firm seeping with history, and I'd also have worked for Gainsborough's Industry.
But on the contrary, I could be casting, turning, and making replica engines like 2", 3", 4" etc etc. I could pick up the skills, learn all about the different types of engines, and even scale my plans to 12" and build a full size replica!

do what your heart desires lad.
personaly, i would work at the model engineers in lincoln. but i think my working days will be in carpentry. my grandad was a carpenter, and i have picked up a lot of skill and knowlege from him. i have a good selection of tools and a good supply of wood.
what have other family members done james, apart from farming?
|
James
|
Oooo loads
Worked at grain mills, lorry driving, army in Egypt (Royal Lincolnshire Regiment), grocers, signal box men, cobblers etc etc
|
Rob
|
i'd go for the model engineers. i think it will cover more and include boilermaking.

James

Aye lad!

The problem is, the complicated Math is the stuff used to calculate how large a boiler need be to do a certain job etc. there is no escape James.

Urrrrrgh
Tried that with me home made engine, and fell asleep

I'd just make a boiler thats considerably bigger than the engine I've got to run, give it a good heated surface area that by my eye looks about right and just up the pressure until its right! It would be dreadfully uneconomical in terms of materials and eventually fuel, but I really wouldn't be bothered! The steam loco I'm buying has a boiler thats bigger than the published design. I'm expecting that to be terrifically uncontrollable steaming wise!
I hated maths, always did, though nowadays I do find it useful to know a bit now and again!
I got two Cs in maths GCSE
I'll let you try and figure that out
At the moment I'm grappeling with Design Tech A level, and I hate it. I REALLY hate it. I'm a garage engineer, an unashamed bodger, I turn my hand to things and if they work then so be it.
DT A level is SOOO tedious. You have to go through all this malarky with getting a "client" which I think is rubbish as I just like making stuff. You get nil points virtually for making the darned thing and if like me your terrible at drawing and designing things then its a lost cause almost coursework wise. The best you can do to rectify this is to score a good 80% or so in the exam. Trouble is my "garage engineer" side is always shining through. I don't go through all the rubbish where you draw 5 or 6 really detailed sketches outlining advantages and disadvantages of those plans, I make a mental sketch and iron out the problems then make it work!
But the theory exam work is virtually business studies, so I'm fed up with that too!
I say bring back Metalwork and Woodwork. You build your things and then hand it in and if your great at making stuff bish bash bosh you get a star mark. None of this rediculously complicated coursework.
Nowadays we are judged on our accounting skills (how cheaply can we make it?) and our artistic skills, and not really our making skills (people at my school often get people to make their projects for them, and yet they still get rubbish grades, regardless of how great the project is)
rant over
