Yes jack, an alternator can overheat . This is one of the known causes of alternator failure and a sign that something needs replacement.

Has it done it all the time or just started? Was your battery low on charge?
If the battery was low or is not holding charge the alternator will get hot.
The voltage regulator may be playing up. Search for "checking voltage regulator on alternator" or something like that to get exact figures, but on a 12Volt battery checking the voltage at the battery terminals it should be no more than 14Volt whilst engine is running. From memory anyway
The bearing could be shot too, but you'd hear that.
I had the same problem on a car more than once (different cars). One time it was the regulator, the other time I assumed the same and took the alternator for a rebuild. Got it home and it still got hot. I took the whole car in and it was a earthing problem or wire problem.

Electrical resistance can alter with temperature change, more so if the insulation is breaking down so output could well be affected.
