Amazed at the read counter (gilsonite interest at SmokStak)Smokstack forums is a center for people who like old full sized engines, primarily gas engines.
I thought to post a condensation of the japan black varnish thread.
I did that 5.5 hours ago. Amazingly the the thread has gotten 170 unique reads already.
Somebody ought to make this stuff up as a product for sale.
Look at the interest level, my gosh!

No, I can't do it. It can only be done by a pro outfit.
Shipping alone requires special qualifications.

This is good. Someone will pick up on the concept and start selling at least the raw gilsonite in small packages.
I know how to prepare it into varnish form and can overcome that learning curve.
If anyone here wants to be a guinea pig and send me an old firebox,
all prepped, ready for paint (bare metal only, no primer!),
I will paint the firebox with two coats of my stock, bake it and return the box.
Then try it out and see if the paint resists the fire well enough.
It's not VHT caliper paint.
It certainly will commence to smoke away to nothing at over 500F.
But where it does not burn off, it sure does have a fine shine,
annnnd, it's rather black!
First firebox will be done free.
I have only a quart of this stuff and so I won't do more than one or two members' fireboxes,
other than for Rog. Roger gets anything from me forever
in gratitude for his public service to the hobby.

Now the thread is 18 hours old.
It has over 450 reads.
The site owner, the biggest guy in the antique engine field,
is enthusiastic for the thread and put special notice of it in his general forum index page.
So this is good because it means that in time that either the ready-to-use varnish will be made available,
or then at least someone will be selling the raw material in hobbyist quantities.
Am happy because I don't want the technology to remain so forgotten, lost,
not when there is so much general interest in the japan black process.

Reid, you are an asset to the hobby yourself. I have a special project in mind that will incorporate the NDB in an elegant walnut plinth, something impossible had you not invented it!!!
I believe your development of such concepts is the REAL asset to this hobby...moving us all ahead a notch or two.

I just want to be remembered for having been a help.
Comedy is fine, I love to poke myself for laughs the most,
but it's the help I like to offer, that I always wanted for myself,
so after the claw of the sea puss gets me, if I can be remembered
for having given tips and ideas and most of all,
for having emboldened all people to think outside the narrow black lines of conventional thoughts of simple things...
that'd be so good to see new burners and bearings and black, and... I don't know what else to do. I absolutely fail at being conventional
and I sure don't like to work, ha ha!
Thanks to Roger, so aptly surnamed and a giant in this hobby field
which, by his talents and kindness, becomes more appealing to more people every day.

Oh, I just want to say that I have some thoughts on reciprocating imbalance and cylinder seals.....
You all are now on notice.
Brevity be damned
as I am.
