another 122 cleanupArrived about ten days ago in need of a little work, but generaly in excellent condition.
Broken steam pipe was removed by inserting a small screw & heating gently.
Steam feed pipe was broken aswell, unusually the were offset between the ports
Soldered & drilled out inside the union.
The pipe was annealed & formed around a pencil to get the offset shape. I moved the port faces along the engine frame to make soldering easier, whilst keeping them at the correct centres.

Wish I had something that gorgeous to 'clean up'
Looks to be coming along well in capable hands & suspect we will be seeing a triumphal first-steaming video very shortly
Superb acquisition - congrats

I agree this one is a beauty, I personally can not wait to see pictures of it once you are done.

Great project. I'm looking forward to the video already. Another engine brought back to life.

Decided to replace the exhaust pipe too, as they were severely kinked .
& soldered into place & re-assembled
New pipe sloder into the boiler & regulator. flame was aimed mainly at the copper pipe to avoid burning the laquer on the brass boiler/regulator.
Back togehter & almost ready to go. I decided not to repaint or polish as the original condition was so good, just rub over with an oily rag.

Although i do not own a bowman, this restauration really meets my taste Just done as much as needed and as less as possible (hope i did translate that saying right)
I like it!

I wish my command of the German language was 1% as good as your command of the English language. I took three years of German in High School and forgot it all.

Very nice MJ! The offset in the steam pipe is interesting... never seen that before. It looks good though. If I hadn't already soldered mine I'd be tempted to do the same.

That's a fine job. I agree that it's just the right amount of effort put in such that it wears its years with dignity and is fully functional.

Excellent clean up MJ. I like the soldering job you did - real nice

I remember seeing that on ebay, glad you got it. I was going to bid but I have just too many other projects to finish and I thought buying another would probably push me over the edge Its coming up a treat, nice piece of work

Many thanks for all the encouragement, i've enjoyed tinkering with this one. It was on the wanted list for ages & was bought via ebay ( sorry mm, about pipping you at the post). It came with it's oiler taps, oil caps & most importantly the burner. The only thing missing was the whistle, thankfully i had a 'new, old' spare one that was being kept back for a future bowman project
I've looked at several pics of 122's on the forums & mine seems to be the only one that has offset steam pipes. Also this one doesn't have the bolt through the boiler/chimney which probably makes it a later model. All that's needed to finish it off is a nice original wooden box to store it in

Will not see many finer examples of a 122 than that one Mike!
Really, a stunning job on the pipework and clean-up job. Amazed the laquer is so good after much a long period of time
Went to a great home, we may need to see a Bowman family snap shot at some point Mike

Ahhh i set myself up for that one

Sorry, couldn't resist!
I think MJ has remarked before that the original wood was pretty poor quality and that might be why not many E's survive. Also I suspect that there weren't that many sold in the first place compared to the number of M's. The base of my E135 is in perfect condition, but that might just be luck.

Was there ever an E140?
|

I've never seen or heard of one, but there was certainly an E158 so there could well have been.

Well ive got parts of an 140 but no base are there any tell-tale signs?
|

I assume that the engine parts are the same as the M version. It would be a nice project to make an E140 out of your bits. Tomorrow I could post the pictures I have of an E158, and the dimentions of the bases of my M158 and M140 if that would help?

That would be great Steve! I thought it would be nicer to make it an E140!
Needs a chimney I think too! Yay
