Another Ausie Says Hello Hi guys! I bought a Renown 101, about six months ago, from an antiques shop. I was told "It's a 1920's model made by a Melbourne company called something simple -er- um- The Australian Steam company - or something like that". Since then I have been doing a bit of investigating (with a lot of help from your members web sites), been disapointed that it isn't from the 1920's, been gratified that I may have paid a fair-ish price, and been delighted by the interesting field of live steam models!!! I think I want another model One may not be enough
Cheers
Larry
P.S I hope it was one of the group that won the Renown locomotive on ebay tonight. Good price

Hi, Larry,
and a warm welcome from Germany. Over the past 20 years my collection grew to 20 pieces of live steam engines of all kinds and makes ! But thatīs nothing! Here you can find people who own 100 + engines, ranging from a heap of rusty metal to a piece of technical artwork.
Mostly these people here buy incomplete, wrecked and odd looking engines and restore them to better as new conditions. These people have a lot of knowledge about steam engines, and the best of all: These friendly guys here are willing to share their knowledge with others
So who ever wants to dig deeper into toy steam modelling is in the right place here.
cheers Joe

er um it was shiny?
Nah I'm a farm-boy and ex-earthmoving operator. so I have an empathy (if that is the right word) for machinery. I liked the simplicity of the Renown. It has a real solid honesty about it.
I also liked the idea that I could play with a machine that I wasn't dependent on. If there is a problem with it, I can take my time nutting out a solution. I don't have to hurry because I need it to get me some-where or do something for me.
It is also a fascinating window into history. The use of chemistry, structure and physics that paved the way to the industrial revolution and hurlled us into an ever more complex world.
It may also be a window into our future. We have used machines like this to harness simple energy into a pulse and convert that pulse into a useable momentum. When looking at such a simple machine it is easy to believe we may yet be able to use natural pulses, such as the waves or the tides, to do much of the work we have delegated to coal and oil.
I think it was Aristotle who said that- to think, man needs lesure. Tinkering is a great way to employ the fingers while the mind roams.
Lots of reasons, including "It was there" and polished brass is real shiny
Cheers
