Another Home build

Here is the latest creation. Built to the specification of my friends three sons.

Between them they must have 10 or 12 Mamod mobiles, in various states of order, some running some not.  Some are now 'spares' engines.

Having shown them my Jones Twin, the eldest, 'James' the eldest of the three wanted a stationary engine.

To this end, he produced a detached TE1A engine frame, then came up with a crank, and a cylinder unit, oh and a flywheel. Looking at the various unoriginal coats of paint in various colours they've all come off diferent engines.

Using a piece of brass channel we made a more stationary like frame for the engine.

At home I had the remains of a SEL boiler, one of its original endcaps, and a spare MM1 endcap. By soldering a brass 1/4 BSF nut on the inside I had a bush for a mamod safety valve (supplied by James), and then soldered the endcaps on. I used a M4 nut and bolt for the level plug.

I had no firebox lieing around, however a shopping trip to lidl boiler in hand found that the Lidl 'Bacon Grill' tin to be about spot on, I purchased a tin, (even eat the vile contents!) for 79p

A bit of work with the dremel, a coat of paint, and a spare MM1 base meant I had a pretty tidy boiler.

A spare bit of pipe and some soldering later and voila.

Not the prettyiest machine, but it works. And James is pleased.

By the way thats a boiler for an Aveling and Porter 8 ton roller in the background. My Fowler is the one behind it.
Andy

great engine, post us a video of it going

have you got any pic of the aveling and the fowler engines.

I bet it runs like there is no tomorrow, looks like a bit if ingenuity paid off.
Mister Occlusion

Seriously cunning use of spares there, and I love that firebox: really looks the part
Reid

Oh, that is so excellent and it's the finest way to teach children
by example of making do with what riches they already have.

Very good thread.

Great job

The firebox is a great touch

Great use for the meat tin there, it looks nice and sturdy.

I like the A&P and Fowlers parts casually sprinkled around

Pics of them as Andy said would be appreciated

Here you go, the boiler from my 1920 Fowler T3 8 Ton Compound Roller. Its had a new boiler barrell, firebox and tubeplate. I'm currently on with fitting stays.

And the Aveling, not sure how old, but its a 8 ton Piston Valve compound Roller. It has been repatriated from Australia. This had had a new boiler barrell only. The tubeplate needs rivetting in yet. It is owned by the world renowned motorcycle sidecar racer Alan 'Scud' Schofield. He also has a DMU.

Thanks

Those look like great projects there

I've never really noticed until I started looking in the last year but atleast in Western Australia there are literally dozens of stationary engines and quite a few traction engines just sitting around in country town parks and old farms just waiting for someone with the skill and money to get going again. All beyond my ability though.

Use all the avaliable resources is my motto as well. well done that man
